It all depends on how you raise your children. Soceity as a whole has kind of dumped the whole yes sir and ma'am. But if you raise your kids right, they can be respectful and will utilize those good manners they were taught no matter what.

Doesn't common courtesy start at home? Today's kids usually have two working parents- the times have a-changed. There isn't enough family values- is time a big factor? at work parents are sometimes frowned on simply because they want to attend their children's activities. There needs to be more family time. The costs nowadays almost makes it impossible to be live on a single parent income- the prices are getting so high so I can see there are probably a lot of frustrated parents out there- doesn't mean that is an excuse to not be a parent.
I've taught my child manners pretty much since day one- you live and learn. If you are respected as an individual at an early age, that child will respect others.
What I don't like is how people automatically judge todays kids without even really knowing them. There are so many awesome kids out there. The golden rule really does work!

Kids these days do not have manners because their parents are too busy to teach them any. It's not difficult to teach our children manners. At times it may be a challenge to enforce it, but it has to be done. Eventually it becomes second nature for them regardless of what other kids are doing.
Regardless of what other people are or are not doing, children have to follow the rules set up by their parents. In this day and age, children with manners stand out and excel in society. It is sad that it has become so unusual to have manners.
Children with good manners have higher self esteem and feelings of accomplishment and self worth. This is due to the fact that people in a position of authority appreciate and acknowledge when children are respectful and well mannered.

Something that I have been pondering about for some time. It is definitely because of bad parenting. These days most of the kids are raised in day cares. Not all day cares teach mannerism, their main focus is to make sure none of the kids are hurt, feed and changed. Since parents are working they are too tired to make an effort to teach mannerism to their kids, second kids spend more time outside the house so they pick things up more from their surrounding.

I think it has to do with Today's society. Things are not like they were when a lot of us were kids. The things kids do today, there is no way they would have gotten a way with it say, 10-20 years ago. I do my best to teach my kids manners and how to have respect for their parents and elders. A lot of parents don't do that, but it is very hard. I have 3 kids 11,9&5 plus I run a day care and I have had a lot of people tell me that they would not take their kids to anyother day care. Because I am always teaching them new and respectable values. So I really don't agrue with the comment form Molly, when she blames it on day care.

Because parents, schools , society no longer expects or demands good manners, non foul language .
Look at the videos the kids watch today, a few years ago someone would have been arrested for shooting up their skirts like that. And they hang out all over the place , no sense of decorum anymore.
Raised in a generation where you couldn't say pregnant on tv and movies were bleeped and the blue movies were on a channel after midnight.

Because the generation that is raising the kids spend more time cussing people out in front of kids. Then being polite and be humane about problems. Go through the mall and see how many adults you see cussing around their kids. The other half is lack of disipline. Im 20 and if I cussed or was rude I got my butt beat. Most parents dont care it seems. Just remember this be an example first praise good behavior and disipline bad behavior. Do not be scared of them callin child services because it is legal to disipline them by spankings.

I blame the English language. Sure, there are the occasional polite terms like sir, ma'am, Mr., and Mrs, but really, the English language doesn't have a polite form. In our language (Korean), there is a whole form of language (called jondenmal) used just to address strangers, adults, and other elders. It's not the children's fault, the English language and "American" culture. I see kids running around calling adults by their first name and the adults just don't care. It seems it's this culture and language that ruined them.

Many parents today don't teach their kids any manners. As long as you teach your kids manners and let them know that manners are always appropriate even if others aren't using them, thats what matters. Kids who have manners stand out in a good way and reflect that their parents care how they interact with other people.
