Hi there...you will need to first contact the airline you're flying to know their animal policy. Next your cat will need to have a rabies vaccine and a health certificate issued by your vet within 30 days of your flight time. You will need to do this for a return flight so if you are visiting make sure to get these done within a week of flying or you'll need to get another health certificate before leaving from a Brooklyn vet before departure. Your question is clear if you are looking for a way to help kitty be calm before traveling or just the technical aspects, which I've tried to answer the latter.

You will have to get a health certificate from your vet. Then buy one of the flat type kennels so the kitten can fly under your seat instead of in cargo. Airlines will not fly pets in cargo during the hot months of the year. Call southwest and find out exactly what they require. Each airline is different. But I do know you will need a health certificate. When you go to the vet to get that the vet will give vaccines needed and tests needed. Which your kitten needs anyway.

You can either get a pet taxi or ask the airliner if they have a special way of transporting pets cross country. If you leave her in a pet taxi, i would put a toy or a blanket that she likes or uses often in with her so she'll have some comforting object w/ her. Familiarity is key to making the cat as comfortable as possible during such a trip.

You should contact Southwest about their policies regarding shipping/transporting animals.

It appears that they do not ship animals, period. But talk to them to be certain.
Some airlines will let you take a cat on board with you, in a soft carrier or "sherpa" bag.... most will make you keep your cat in a hard sided carrier. But call the airlines.
