a basic canvas painting that is stretched over a basic wooden square frame and the canvas is wrapped around and stapled to the frame.. are you just supposed to put a nail up on the wall and then sort of set the frame on it or what? seems like surely there is a sturdier way.

You could just hang it on a nail, but most people put a small screw eye into each side of the wooden stretcher and then twist on some picture hanging wire. This is easily removed if you want to frame it later, and the same stuff can be used on the frame to hang it.

Frames are tacky. If the artist wanted the work framed they would have sold it to you that way. I never frame my painting I sell and hope no one frames them after purchasing them. I buy pieces or trade work gallery ready and hang it the way the artist sells it to me. Simply eyeball around where you want it hold it up with around 3-4 small 1 inch or so nails with a hammer and a level. Simple.

You should really frame it. It will enhance the beauty of the painting.... After you've done it...you'll see what a huge difference.
