It depends on how you are as a patient. I usually give a little bit of local anesthetic for the gums. The drilling will be at the edge or slightly below the edge of your gums and this might be bothersome. Also, part of the procedure for making a good impression of your tooth can be moderately painful to your gums. Some people can stand it and prefer to go without the numbness, but I'm happier when they are numb.

Yes you will need to be frozen to do the crown! The dentist will need to work around the gums and it will be uncomfortable if you are not frozen! The crown will not be quick the will need to prep your tooth for the crown, which is a long procedure, anywhere from 1hr to 2 depending on how quick you dentist is! What they do is reduce the tooth so that the crown will fit over top of the tooth. Once the tooth is prepped the dentist will take an impression to send to the lab so they can make the crown, then a temporary crown will be on your tooth for a week or 2 depending on how quick the lab is. Then you will come back for a short appointment for the crown to be cemented on to your tooth!

If you had a root canal, then all of the nervous tissue in your tooth has been removed, thus, there will be no pain. It should be a pretty quick procedure, and there should be no need for novocaine. I just had a root-canal about a year ago.

Since you had a root canal, that tooth has no nerves or blood vessels. The tooth is dead, so you do not need Novocaine.

You'll be much happier if they get you numb. Yes, this tooth is essentially "dead" but the gum tissues around it are not and they have to do a bit of work on them. Expect this appointment to prep the tooth for the crown to take about an hour. Good luck
