Each service has different kinds of jobs in it. You can be a desk person or a field agent in practically any large law enforcement agency. FYI, some federal agents are detectives, some are not.

Depends on what type of federal agents. The FBI - desk. The Marshal Service, Border Patrol, Custom - field.
Detectives work for local agencies. They spend most of their time investigating from their desks (depending on specialties)
