She may have a piece of placenta still in the uterus. this can cause heavy bleeding & needs to be checked by a dr ASAP! by a few days after delivery, the bleeding should be a dark red with a mild to maybe moderate flow. bright red heavy bleeding or passing large clots is something that needs to be checked out. it could also mean that she has an infection or maybe her uterus is not contracting back to its original shape on its own & she may need medicine to help her out.
a firm uterus is actually a good thing, & has nothing to do with a large abdomen. you can feel the uterus in the abdomen by applying gentle pressure. it should feel like a firm round ball below her belly button. if it is above her belly button or it is soft & boggy, that means trouble!!
these are just a few of the things that COULD be wrong. i'm no doctor...
regardless, she should be double checked if she is bleeding that heavily and all they did was blood work!!

I'm not a doctor but a friend of mine had a similar problem- the bleeding doesn't occur for the most part (the uterus shedding) until it starts to contract back down to normal size. My friends uterus was still hard after she gave birth because it didnt start to contract right away. Your sister is right to follow up with the doctor- but it sounds like the same thing. Her uterus just took a little longer to start contracting, and now it is and the uterus is shedding. Keep up with the doc- but try not to worry too much! Hope everything is ok!

Has she called her doctor? Any time I have ever taken any of my children, or myself for that matter, to the hospital, they always say it's one thing, but when you go the doctors, it's always something else. With all three of my children, I always had a soft stomach, Large still, but soft. The bleeding for me after 4 weeks of having the baby, was gone by then. Except for my first child. That lasted for 6 weeks, but very lite. I would stress to her sh e needs to call the doctor and see what he/she says. It don't sound normal to me. Good luck

This sounds very serious, I thought health care was more advanced than that, here in UK we have a midwife visit us every day after the birth to check your stomach and blood loss, as well as baby. Also GP comes to see you. She could have some placenta left or an infection. I would treat this very seriously

Sounds like she really needs a second opinion. Mine was always soft and very loose after birth.

She needs to wait for results.
But wait! Why the hell isn't she in the hospital?
The same thing happened to my mother. She almost died. She had an infection because the hospital was crappy and wasn't clean when she gave birth to my sister(this was 18 years ago in europe). She wouldn't stop bleeding. She was in the hospital for almost 2 weeks.

No, I have never had that happen or know any one that did. Good thing she went to the hosptial. She should go back if thing's get worse or don't get better. It can be critical bleeding too much so don't wait if it's bad.HOPE she feels better soon.

She may be hemorraghing (not sure if thats spelled right...). She needs to go to the ER because she can go into a coma or die. I know a girl who did after she had her daugther and she was in a coma for a few weeks.

I would advise getting a second opinion from another doctor! Insist to the health care personal that if anything happens by sending her home, there'll be a lawsuit!
