I assume you mean AIDS. Which is an acronymn and stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a disease which is caused by HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus).
The HIV virus resides in the human body, mostly in the blood but in several other bodily fluids. People can carry the virus without having full-blown AIDS.
You can get the HIV virus by your own bodily fluids coming in contact with the infected bodily fluids of another human being. Generally it is believed that sex is the most common transmission method.
HIV attacks the immune system, and a carrier is diagnosed as having AIDS when their immune system has become so weakened by the virus that the body finds it difficult to fight infections which a healthy person would easily shake off.

The best way to avoid catching the illness is to use a condom, and always be careful and aware when having sex.

I agree with most of what Sean R said below. However - the best way to avoid contracting the HIV virus that causes AIDS is to not have sex. Abstinence from intravenous drug use and sex is the only sure way to prevent yourself from getting the virus. If you do have sex - you have to use a condom (and use it right) every time. If you are doing IV drugs, it is important that you do not share needles, and use only new, clean needles.
