Your car has a key sercurity chip that needs to be programmed for the car. This is your passive sercurity system which gets you discounts on your insurance and makes it so your car can not be started w/o special keys codes on the key. We have a 2006 corolla and know how you feel. You can buy a regular key for the doorlocks, incase you lock your keys in car for a couple of bucks.
My suggestions
1 Watch for "Toyota service specials", sometimes we get mailings for 20% off parts.....
2 call around to see if prices are the same at different dealers
3 put key on hiking buckle and secure it

Ok people are you stupid... you cant go to get a key made at the local locksmith for 4 buck... It will not start you car they dont have the ability to put the computer chip in the key. The car has an upgraded chip in the key and the ignition to prevent theft. The ONLY way to get a key that will work with you ignition is a Toyota Dealership. I understand it seems like a rip off but it is worth every cent.

Near impossible, especially if it has a chip in it- unless you know someone with a "box" which is hooked up inside the vehicle, usually under the steering wheel to the left where you would pop the engine- they would plug it in there, read the car, put the key in the ignition to program the chip, etc. lots of work and 130 is not too too bad, try a Saab or a caddy key for 600 bucks. good luck

It's not a rip off. It's the cost of the components, the technology, the time it takes to manufacture the key, the electronics and the $70 profit the dealer makes.

There are a fixed number of keys that can be made(usually 7). Then the ignition needs to be replaced.
Some locksmiths can make you a key. They need a special key cutter that cost several thousand dollars.
The price is about right.

Unfortunstelly, the built in microchip needs to be programmed to the ignition as well as matching it to the other keys that you have. You're paying for the technology, of today's cars.

Try going to any key shop and see if they can duplicate it. Toyota might have just been lying to get more money. I bet the other key shops can make it.
