Here is something from a site: http://www.ehow.com/how_13384_improve-spelling.html
Steps:
1. Read, read, read. As with every skill and talent, practice makes perfect (or at least closer to perfect).
2. Write, write, write. See above.
3. Keep a list of cantankerous words that always trip you up, and practice them as you walk, jog or wait for the train.
4. Look up any word you're unsure about in the dictionary. The more times you see the correct spelling, the more automatic it becomes.
5. Read the spelling rules in the dictionary's small print or in the introduction.
6. Be aware of the few spelling rules that exist. For example, the old favorite: "I before e except after c, or when sounding like a, as in neighbor and weigh." Also, u will always follow q in the English language.
7. Play spelling games such as Scrabble, crosswords or Taboo.
8. Create spelling tests for yourself. Write the words down, cover them up and score yourself.
This place has a spelling study game:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/words/spelling/waystolearn/lookcover/game.shtml
(they also have a practice worksheet there)

Start reading the dictionary, or using webster.com
Run everything you do through spell check on Word, and keep a list of the words you misspell. Take out the list when you have free time and write them down correctly spelled 21 times. This should help.
Good Luck!

Read a lot of books, and copy different themes. You can choose what you like better. Buy a spelling book and do all the practices. Finally go to spelling and grammar lessons. Good luck.

Good advice in these answers.
Practice the most commonly misspelled words and the most commonly used words from the links below. If you can master most of these that will be a big help to you.
Good luck with it.

Practice, practice, practice!
One way to do it is to type in MS Word with auto spellchecker active, and watch as it attempts to correct your spelling. Then learn from it. :-)
Good luck! I applaud you for your efforts!
