You take your shoes off to be x-rayed. That is the purpose. The TSA can X-ray the shoes in 2 machines. They can see right through the shoe to see if anything unusual is in it. It doesnt matter what type it is, If they think there is a bomb in that shoe, say bye bye to your flights for the day. And hello to jail and 10,000 in fines.

In the X-ray the shoe is a outline and a bar in it, if it has a metal sole, anything else is easily detected,

the metal detectors cant detect it, that is why the TSA requires all passengers with about a 1 inch heal to remove there shoes. They arent going to make someone take off flip flops!

There's is the metal detector that you pass through, and there's the x-ray machine which you put your hand luggage through. Since the shoe bomber incident shortly after 9/11, shoes are required to be x-rayed for possible explosives. X-ray machines are becoming so sophisticated that they can detect explosives as well as metal objects.

Hey, they caught the shoe bomber while I was flying for x-mas. I have always taken my shoes off to go through security. They put the shoes through the x-ray machine, not a metal detector.

Richard Reed is the SHOE-bomber from England. He used plastic explosive material as soles for his shoes, and tried to light them on the airplane. Now, even kid's shoes with neon gel substance in the soles are not permitted on airplanes.

Take off footwear, belt, something on your wallet until now entering into the time of the detector. you are able to hold your fee ticket and identification on your hand. Doing that i've got by no ability had the alarm burst off. AND, you will get randomly searched at ANY time, whether you probably did no longer set off off the alarm.

Because of the terrorist, who tried to sneak a exposes on board in his shoe. Also because you could hide something like a knife in the soles of your shoe and it might not come up on the x-ray.
