Taking the train across the country is a fabulous way to see Canada. I have taken the train from Toronto to Calgary and on another trip from Winnipeg to Vancouver. I would highly recommend the train trip. There are stops along the way so you do get a bit of a break here and there. The landscape is so different from one province to another that it is all quite interesting. Even though the prairies are very flat they too have there own beauty. The skies in the prairies are huge and beautiful, and the breeze rustling through the wheatfields is actually very pretty. I actually find it very peaceful and calming. The trip through Ontario is great with tons of lakes, forests, rock faces and rugged beauty. Going through the Rocky Mountains by train was the most awesome trip I've ever made. It is absolutely incredible and even a little scarey crossing the Frazer near Kicking Horse pass.
It's worth getting a berth for the trip so you can get a good rest and have a little privacy on the trip. It costs a little more but is worth it.
The train has a very nice dining car but the meals are quite expensive. It's a good idea to take some munchies like nuts, pretzels etc. because they too can get expensive on the long trip.
The nice thing about the train is you can sit in the dome car and have an excellent view of the terrain that you are passing through. You will find the people very friendly generally speaking and often sitting around playing cards and talking so it really helps to pass the time if you strike up a conversation with other travellers. The bar car is a blast especially in the evening and you'll probably end up with some new friends on the trip.
I have never found the train to be boring...but rather just the opposite. The slower areas are also a great place to catch up on some reading or visiting with fellow travellers.
I would highly recommend the Trans Canada trip by train.

The longest train ride I've taken was from Toronto to Thunder Bay. Its a 20 hr train ride that runs along the shores of the Great Lakes. As get to Sudbury it's late at night so by the next morning your are deep in the Canadian Shield. It's not the Rockies by any means but very nice just the same. We watched the sun come up several times that morning because we would lose sight of it on almost every corner then watch it rise over the next rock formation.

Well obviously that guy hasn't been to Canada..lol
I have travelled across Canada but by car, not train. I personally wouldn't enjoy travelling that far on a train since you can't stop for anything that you might want to do. But once you get out west into Alberta Rockies, I'm more than positive you will enjoy the trip. It is very beautiful.

Great trip..and the train does stop occasionally..Breathtaking country..many different scenic areas. The vastness of northern ontario is a little boring, but beats the heck out of crossing Russia or Austrailia

Travel by train is the most relaxing and interesting and comfortable way to travel. Someone else is doing the driving and you can just sit back and enjoy.
