SItuation: I was shopping with my 3 kids at a local chain shoe retailer. We we almost done, ready to purchase shoes, when my 4 year old daughter started to lose control of her bowls. I ask a store clerk if she could use the bathroom. It was an emergency. He then went to the register and ask the store manager, who said no. The time it took him to do that, my 4 year old daughter lost it fesces started to come out and she started crying. I stood there begging the manager to please let us use it she has a medical condition, meanshile, holding my 5 month daughter as well, he said absolutely not. "I can't break policy for you mame". When I heard that, I obviously lost it, and said "don't you have any compassion?!" I was mad! I left, went nearby to a public resturant, where they kindly let us use their bathroom. That wasn't the end, but my question still exist.

There are some chains that do not offer publicv restrooms and no it is not required for them to either.
I know that it can be very upsetting, I have been there myself with my 3 year old.
Personally I do not shop at the stores that do not provide a public restroom for this reason.

Is this a private store, or part of a chain? If it is just one of your home-grown clothing stores, there's not much you can do. If it is part of a chain, be it a franchise or company, I'd check the website or call the store and get a customer service phone number. Most stores have some sort of customer service rep. You can e-mail them. Otherwise, if it's one of those hometown stores, I'd call back and explain your child's condition, and your concern for other customers. I'd ask the manager to either post a "No Public Restroom" sign, or allow customers to use the facilities they have. If he's still as rude as before, I'd kindly (or not so) tell him you'll let other moms know about the service their kids will get at this store.

Yes, all public stores have to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The must provide entrances and exits that are compatible with wheelchairs and they must allow people to use the bathroom facilities. You would think that a fellow human being, if for no other reason than that you are also a human being, would recognize a situation where a person needed help and would offer it. Sadly, this world is full of jerks. Go back to that store and lodge a formal complaint. You said this is a chain, so take your complaint past the management to the corporate level. Ask for their corporate phone #, website info and address. And specify your reason why you are upset and are NOT going to purchase things from that store again. Corporate should understand the laws and rectify the situation.

I know how you feel! I was in a drug store shopping when my son had to use the restroom. I asked the cashier and her reply was I had to buy something first. Even though I had items in my hand but wasn't ready to purchase them yet. I just dropped everything on the counter and left.
Luckily there was a McDonalds next door and he didn't have an accident.
I think if your in the store shopping you deserve the right to use their precious bathroom.

Being the Mother of a daughter that is disabled too, my heart goes out to you. I don't know if it's the law or not, but he should've let you use the restroom. It was very heartless of him! I truly know how upsetting this was for you. I'd definitely write a letter and call the corporate office to have your complaints heard. GOOD LUCK!

No, because only the employees are insured to be in the stockroom and they don't know if is has a disease of some kind and if she catches something after using their restroom it's a law suit. It's best to take her to a public restroom because they carry liability insurance. And plus if he gets fired you're not going to pay his bills for him it's strict company policy.

He definitly should have had some compassion and let you use it but unfortunately he was not breaking any laws by not letting you use it. If I were you, I would write a letter to the corporate headquaters about it and no l,onger shop at that store and also write a letter to that store and it's manager letting him know you are boycotting it.

by law, i don't know. any humane person would let you use the restroom. and i don't care if there's a medical condition involved, if a child has to go, a child has to go. they can't hold it like an adult! i sure hope you didn't buy the shoes!

I'm guessing that only stores that also serve food are required to provide restrooms to their patrons. Dunno. In this case, though, the manager made a lousy call.
