I've heard that its ok to do it as long as you do it one ceretain way round - grape first and then barley - or is it barley first and then grape?
You may also get away with it more if you were drinking expensive, good quality stuff, like really fine expensive whiskey and good real ale. And you didn't drink too much of it. Its my experience that the more expensive and quality the stuff you drink the less likely it is to make you feel like shite. I think it may be because finest whiskey tends to be purer with less chemical crap than the cheap plonk.
The other problem with mixing is that in beer and lager the alcohol is more diluted so you don't get so dehydrated, but spirits are much more concentrated. As hangovers seem to be very much caused by dehydration its possible the two types may react in some way to increase your dehydration. Most people I know get much more hungover from spirits and shorts because of the dehydration factor.
Either way I wouldn't know as I avoid mixing drinks as much as I can. I prefer my alcohol when I know I won't be up half the night and the next morning worshipping the porcelain god!

It may or may not give you a worse hangover, but it is likely to make you feel drunker faster.
My understanding is that wines contain compounds that promote the absorption of alcohol through the stomach lining. However, wine has a low alcohol content per unit volume. Combining alcohol with high-content liquors will give you the fast absorption due to the wine coupled with large concentrations of alcohol.
I would not recommend doing this -- alcohol poisoning would not be desirable.

It is probably to do with the sugar contents of the wine as opposed to the hard liquor. Probably the various histamines in the two different type of alcoholic beverages makes it worse too. Mixing both types of alcoholic beverages really can give you a wicked hangover!

You sort of answer your own question- it's much easier to take in extra alcohol if you mix your drinks. If you stick to just one kind, you start to get a bit bored, and slow down your drinking. Changing drinks gives you a bit of novelty, so you focus on drinking again. It's the same reason that its easier to eat too much if you have a buffet than just a big pile of one foodstuff.

I've mixed alcohol lots of times and never got hungover. A hangover comes from drinking too much alcohol.

The only reason someone would say so is due to the elevated and non-distilled sugars in grape.
