Get one of the natural products for horses or Adams makes a fly spray for dogs.
If it is the dogs ears get a product called SWAT it comes in a jar and is bright pink you can put it on over open woulds and it will keep the flys off for several days before you have to reapply it.
It is safe and works better than anything else.

Go to the feed store and buy an ointment that comes in a jar. It is pink. I'm not home now so can't look up the name of it. I think it might be called swat. Put it especially on the tips of the ears and the nose. And of course anywhere else you see fly strikes. I've used it for years it works great and will stay on for 24-36 hours. If the flies are on the body then get some adams that is water based. The regular one is made with alcohol and will evaporate too quick. There are other products sold that claim to work for flies but this is the only one I have found that really works. Just open the jar and see if it's pink. I used it on my horse and my dogs for many years. Still do. Be sure to apply to any open wounds as well. If you don't do something soon in a few summers your dog will actually start to loose alot of the tips of it's ears.

I am outside during the day when my masters are at work. In the summer my private regions get bitten by black flies. My masters spray that area with this stuff they get from the local garden and farm store. It really keeps the flies off. I can't remember the name, but if you mention the problem, they should be able to help you. It tastes real yukky, so I don't lick it off. (and it is harmless to my skin).

I know you didn't ask for this, but do you ever let your dog inside? I'm sure you realize that dogs are social animals and need to feel as though they're a member of the pack, which in this case is your family!
Hopefully the dog is allowed inside sometimes and not always left outside on its own without at least some attention.
I don't mean to be harsh or preachy, but dogs need love, too!! (Sorry for not actually answering your question!)

Either hang fly strips, etc. to rid yourself of flies. O r talk to your vet about getting some fly spray for animals, which deters flys. Don't use just any fly spray, get one from your vet b/c some are poisonous!

You might try asking the vet if they have any thing that you can put on your dog other than flea spray or seven dust. I've never had this problem before.

Why would you get a dog, and then just keep him outside? Get him to the vet, get him current on his shots and whatever else he needs, and then let him live inside your house.

Why is your dog outside? If he can't be inside, you should not have him. That is cruel.
