What you're really asking is a question of radiation.
The harmfull effects from both the sun and a tanning bed come from long term exposures on high energy radiations. They tan you, but they also hurt you.
The damage comes from when high energy radiation interacts with the atoms in a cell. It creates free electrons though what are called photo-electric interactions. These electrons are charged and thus damage surrounding atoms in the cell. Over time this can damage the cell and thus lead to cancer.
The factors that affect you are two things. How high of energy the raditation is, and how long you are in it.
Normal human exposure at sea level is around 300 mrem per year. Tanning increases this.
A tanning bed gives a much higher dose, hence why you tan faster in it. So in the end, neither is any better. A bed gives you a high acute dose, while the sun gives you a lower exposure, but staying in it longer has the same end result.

Tanning salons are worse because they have more harmful and directed UV rays. The sun is almost as bad and both are very dangerous. You should NOT tan, the risk of skin cancer is very high and it also makes you wrinkle earlier if you tan. Wear at least SPF 15 sunscreen every day on any sun-exposed areas (I wear Purpose moisturizer on my face) and if you must have a tan, use a sunless tanner...PLEASE!

Neither one is safer than the other. Just know that indoor tanning is more controlled than the sun. You run the same risks and usually gain the same benefits!

Probably the sun, if you wear sunscreen and things, but if you go to a salon they're using other stuff, and it could be harmful to your skin. I heard it causes cancer, from the waves. But I don't know for sure.

No. Spray tans are the main secure. the two the organic solar and tanning shops load you with UVA and UVB rays, that are carcinogenic. tanning shops are relatively undesirable. medical doctors propose no extra advantageous than quarter-hour of unprotected organic solar exposure each and every week.

Neither one is healthy for you. But I say the tanning bed is worse for you. I know of someone who went too much and it fried her insides.
