Emigration. Most Caucasian people on the continent of Africa are from other areas like Europe. South Africa was colonized first by the Dutch, then British I believe and some Germans early on as the language of Afrikaans is a mix of Dutch, German, English and Swahili.

Where we live, climate wise, if we are there long enough determines the amount of melanin in our skin.. but you are talking many many centuries here.

If I moved to somewhere equatorial I'd probably end up with skin cancer because my skin is so fair I'd be constantly burnt.

I think where you live had something to do with skin color originally way back in the cave days. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a generalization that people from such-and-such region are this or that color. Like asians are classified as 'yellow', africans 'black', european 'white', native american 'red', etc. NOW there are white people in Africa because people can totally travel, man. There's, like, footpower, and bicycles, and buses, and trains, and boats...

Before migration and colonization, specific groups of people lived in specific regions of the world. Dark skinned people lived in Africa and South America and various places that got plenty sunlight. Light skinned people lived in Europe and Asia and various places where sunlight was not as plentiful. Once man started migrating and establishing colonies in various parts of the world then white people were born in Africa and black people were born in Europe.

People have to adjust to their environment.... Where your ancestors *came from* has to do with skin color... someone with skin as light as snow, without proper sun protection, would get severe sunburns in the middle of the sahara dessert.

Common sense, there are all types of people everywhere because they emigrate there.
