Not to put down Catholism but that is more of a problem in the catholic church and thats partly because they require that priests
remain unmarried and celabite. With that as a requiement its been made difficult to find men with normal sexual behaviors

First, a few facts: the vast majority of Catholic priests (and other Christian clergymen) are not pedophiles.
In addition, the vast majority of pedophiles are not priests.
There are other groups of professionals who work with kids -- public school teachers, for instance -- who are far more likely to molest kids.
Not to mention, the group most likely to molest kids are ... kids' own parents or other adult relatives.
Sexual molestation by Catholic priests is actually very rare these days -- there were only 21 allegations against priests involving alleged incidents occuring in the year 2005. Most of the cases you read about are at least 20 or 30 years old.
Now, having said that, it's inexcusable for the Catholic priesthood to have ANY child molesters in its ranks. We expect more from these men.
Most of the priests who were guilty of this horrible crime came into the priesthood during a time of social -- and sexual -- upheaval. I'm talking specifically about the late 1960s and 1970s.
It was a period of time in which there was a noticeable drop in discipline in all segments of society -- including the Church.
Now, thankfully, those days are gone. The Catholic Church is returning -- slowly, but it is returning nonetheless -- to its more conservative and orthodox roots.
As such, I'm confident that a return to clerical discipline will occur. Actually, it already has started.
There have been very few incidents of priestly sexual molestation in the last ten to fifteen years, and I believe that through a re-embracing of Catholic orthodoxy, that trend will continue.

Hi Bizarro:
Pedophilia is not exclusive to Christian priests. You're making it sound like it's something ALL Christian priests do. It isn't, any more than it's something ALL men do. A few Christian priests have been found guilty of pedophilia. So have other men, from other religions and other backgrounds.
This is not defending pedophiles in any way, whether they are Christian priests or anything else, because it is a heinous crime, but please don't generalize so carelessly.
tnx

Some have drawn distinctions - saying that these Catholic priests were molesting post-pubescent, not pre-pubescent, boys and were homosexuals admitted to the priesthood when the American Catholic church relaxed its standards. This is why, I have heard, the Boy Scouts don't want gay scoutmasters - to avoid a similar mistake.
Whatever they were, the Church did not deal with this problem effectively for a LONG time, and many people were hurt.
I hope they are addressing it now.
PS Does anyone know the "frequency rate" for molestation in the Catholic church as opposed to, say, the public schools or any other such institution? I haven't seen it reported.

I believe not all of them are guilty of the brand. When you are in the path to something spiritual, the more temptations are set before your eyes. There are of course some human beings that possess a weak personality that can easily be swayed to cater to temptations. It is like ordinarily when a chocolate is always set on the table, chances are you do not give so much attention to it. But when the doctor says it is not good for your health, you develop a craving oftentimes much greater than what is there when you were healthy.
The Bible in its beginning had already shown how weak a human being could be by the example given about the apple. So, do not generalize. Pray for them, because they are much of a victim too as their prey.

Christian priests may end up this way for a couple of reasons.
They may have been evil, depraved people before becoming
priests and use this way to satisfy horrible desires as well as
attack the reputation or effectiveness of true priests or of the
church by association.
A second way comes from the corrupting affect of being almost "idolized" by many who begin to follow them instead
of Jesus. Following Jesus is humbling, but being followed by
people can produce arrogance. This makes a priest or anyone
else an easy target for the enemy of the chuch.
There are likely more reasons, but it the whole horrible
reality is a nightmare for many and damaging to many more who
need a Christian friend, pastor, or priest.

well.
from when i was a young catholic girl, girls were seen as the carriers of original sin and weren't allowed to be a part of the mass. so it was the boys who were there behind the alter and practicing to be alterboys with the priests, alone, in the back.
to be honest, i don't even know what the back of the church looks like.
now it's much more equal, both boys and girls can be alterservers. and so now both have an equal chance of being molested. which is a shame. i think we should let the poor bastards marry so we don't have this problem.

Be careful what you say here.
Not all Christian priests are pedophiles. Mine most certainly isn't. This has only been revealed to be a problem in the Catholic church. The trials are also scarce at best.

For the same reasons, many in the media secretly enjoy seeing the Catholic Church and the Christian church in general, because of its traditional condemnation of homosexuality under attack. The fact that the Catholic hierarchy has allowed homosexual priests to prey on teen-age boys serves as a useful sledgehammer for discrediting the entire Christian church as well as the religion it so imperfectly represents.

who said they were Christians?
A lot of homosexuals have become priests because the word got out in the gay community that if you became a priest you could have all the little boys you want, and they'll even cover up for you and keep you from being prosecuted (the local Bishop will (protect you). . he'll just 'reassign you to some other parish"
