Sometimes it's the only thing they understand. They physically hurt each other to get their point across. I have to pop my ferrets on the nose or my finger would get chewed off and then they'd take to biting everyone children included. But eventually the point does get across and they stop biting and don't get hit, it's called behavior modification, and should not be done in anger.

You can't put them in a time out or take away their toys. They don't understand nor would they know what they did wrong. When my dog gets out of line, I do smack it. It learns it's lesson and knows not do it again. It's worked for me so far. There's a difference between smacking or 'spanking' as you put it and beating. Get it right.

Well if my horse bites me or trys to kick me, im gonna smack him. Along with my dog (even though he wouldn't do that). That behavior is totally unacceptable. Thats not abuse, that is self defence.
But if the animal didnt do anything wrong, that is abuse. And abuse is sick. People who abuse animals should go to jail.
