Because we live in an English speaking country, now if we were in a Spanish speaking country then we would have to learn Spanish. Spanish people need to learn to speak English or any other national language where they live, if not in their home country.

Americans have a hard enough time speaking English.

I speak Spanish, but I also in New Mexico, and it's our co-official state language. Legally speaking though, any state that became part of the US as a result of the Mexican-American War must protect the language and culture of the Spanish/Mexican people who lived there before it became part of the US. So anyone in Texas, Arizona, California, and parts of Utah, Nevada, Colorado and Wyoming legally has the right to Spanish translation etc., assuming they can prove their heritage that they Spanish/Mexican family lived in the area prior to the Mexican American war. Check it out, it was really Mexico's only "gain" in the Treaty of Guadelupe-Hidalgo.

The same reason Mexicans don't have to learn English, or why the Chinese don't have to speak Italian, or why the portugese don't have to speak French. You are only asked to understand the official language in your own country. For the United States of America, that language is English. If you move to the U.S. from anywhere else why should the rest of the country have to speak your language, instead of visa versa. If every time in U.S. history that there was a large influx of people from a different country, the entire population had to learn a new language we'd all be required to know dozens of languages. Not very plausible, is it?

On May 19, 2006, the United States Senate voted to make English the national language of the United States. According to the bill, written by Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.), the federal government will no longer provide multilingual communications and services, except for those already guaranteed by law. Shortly after the approval of the Inhofe amendment, the Senate voted for another bill by Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colo.), according to which English is the "common unifying language of the United States," but mandated that nothing in that declaration "shall diminish or expand any existing rights" regarding multilingual services.

That's a great question. I'm sure you will hear, in American, people should learn English. But what they are failing to realize is that most civilizations require a 2nd language. But somehow Americans don't need this.

I agree that we should learn Spanish. In fact, I've found that most Mexicans are very appreciative of people who attempt to learn their language. Most of the time, if you keep a sense of humor when you attempt their language they will laugh and appreciate the attempt. And they are very willing to teach you!

Porque en los Estados Unidos, hablamos ingles.

Parce-que aux Etats-Unis, nous parlons anglais.

Wo men shuo ying wen zhe bian.

Mexicans speak Spanish in their country; it is their official language. If I were to travel there or live there, I would speak Spanish there. English is spoken here in America. It is our national language. If you want to live here, then you must learn to function in an English-speaking environment. That doesn't (or at least shouldn't) stop us Americans from learning how to speak other languages, however. I speak three and am learning three others. If someone from another country comes to live here, they should learn to speak the language. It's common courtesy. I know English is a commonly-spoken language in a lot of places these days, but I certainly don't expect people in other countries to speak English to me when I visit them.

Well, for that matter, why don't we learn to speak Chinese or Japanese or French. It's because English is the official language of the US. We are not a bilingual country. Why are mexicans so selfish that they feel that we should accomodate them when they chose to come to an english speaking country??
By the way, did you know that they offer the written drivers license test in Florida in 12 different languages!! If you can't read english to take the test, how are you going to read the road signs once you do get your license??

I guess they like speaking English, it is the language that is most commonly used in this country. But they could branch out to other languages. Yes English is the official language, but many other languages are spoken here. I love learning new languages and speak 2 fluently, learning another. I dont know why they dont want to learn I think English is an ugly language anyway compared to French or Italian or even Spanish.
"seeing clearly"- not all who speak Spanish are criminals. If you believe that you are seriously messed up in the head.
