this is a catch-22...i have been depressed for about 4 years now...i think know why im depressed and i also know that by doin this one thing ill immediately get out of depression...but to do it i need energy and motivation which i dont have because im depressed...and ive been trying to do it for almost half an year now...the continuous failures are giving me panic attacks everyday...
Therefore, should i go to the doc and get the meds or should i wait a little longer to see if i can do that thing without the meds?I dont want meds coz they can become addictive and can have horrible side effects...

Meds ar not addictive but can have side effects altohugh the newer anti depressants have very few - they are usually very easy to some off and you DO NOT end up on them for life usually between 7 to 12 months
The alternative is therapy with a good psychotherapist -

Just by your question, it's obvious you need professional psychiatric help...period.
Mental illness is like any other illness, be it diabetes, high blood pressure, etc., except it involves the brain and it's relationship to other parts of our body. We're just hung up about it and in denial because of the sterotypes that go along with depression and mential illness.
Don't be afraid to help, and don't "suppose" anything regarding meds, since you're not an MD.
Peace and good luck...

The meds AREN'T addictive- and they will help. It will take a while- for me it took about a month before I noticed a marked improvement. I can honestly say that I don't know where I would be if I hadn't gone to the doctor, admitted my problem, and gotten the help I needed.
It is tough- a little scary, too - but worth it to feel human again.

Make the meds your last option. I would keep trying to do whatever it is that you need to do to get out of depression. Meds are the easy way out and once you start them, you will be taking them for the rest of your life. If you start meds, and stop taking them at anytime, your depression will be twice as bad as it is now.

That depends on what this "one thing" is that will alleviate your depression. You can always seek anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) medications such as Xanax and combine this with an antidepressant like Prozac in low dosages to see if the effects will warrant change. I would strongly urge you to talk to your doctor or therapist before making a decision, though. Good luck!

Depression is a treatable disease. To let it go untreated is silly. Would you let diabetes go untreated????? If you are unable to function as you are, things could hardly be worse, could they??? See a phys. who deals in depression. For some people it takes trial and error before a drug or a cocktail of them work. Don't give up. the side effects of antidepressants aren't anything as bad as your panic attacks, which have got to be scarry as hell -- had one once, and just about lost it..... so I hear what you are saying. My advise? Get on some antidepressant, and keep your doc informed as to how it is working.

The depression is the real problem. One way or another, get it under control. You may find it's worth it to deal with side-effects. Talk with a doctor, and do it now!
Good luck!

You may want to check out www.hufa.org. If low blood sugar is the cause of your depression (and it can cause/worsen depression), then changing what foods you eat and when you eat them should help get you some motivation, and, if you do the snacks, may help with the panic attacks.
Best wishes

antidepressants are not addictive and you wont neccessarily be on them for the rest of your life. they are also not "the easy way out". they wont fix all your problems but they do help. you will still have to work things out on your own or with a therapist. you've been depressed 4 years. dont you think youve punished yourself enough? get some help

Go and see your doctor. Talk openly with him/her and see what they think. If you have been depressed for this long without help then it has gone too far for you to fix it alone. Depression is not a self-help kind of illness. Yes, illness.
