Why do we refer to whisky from Scotland as "Scotch" but are not allowed to call a Scottish man Scotch?

Scotch is the term for the alcoholic beverage............SCOT is the term for a native.....your question was why?...........................

My (Scottish) father always said that Scotch refers to whisky, eggs or mist. Everything else is Scottish and the people are Scots, which can also be an adjective as in 'the Scots dialect/accent/whatever'. However, he also referred to his two maiden aunts (who did both like a drop of the rare stuff) as the Scotch aunts. Perhaps a sly dig?

Don't call it "Scotch", just call it "Whisky". The Real Stuff comes from Scotland and anything else isn't worth talking about.

And if you call me "Scotch" to my face then you'd better give me a bottle of the good stuff to calm me down pretty quick.

In American English "Scotch" and "Scottish" are interchangable; some Americans call the man (or woman) "Scotch" and some call the whisky "Scottish".

Thats a good question. I remember being told as a kid that you weren't supposed to call Scottish people "Scotch" but you can call Whiskey "Scotch". Weird.

only whisky from scotland can be called "whisky" bourbon and irish whiskey are spelt differently, like only sparkling wine from the champagne region can be called champagne.
