Amtrak is NOT PRIVATE OWNED, it is a goverment operation.
And it isn´t a "railroad", as Amtrak operates trains mostly over tracks owned by private freight railroads (with exceptions from Washington DC to Boston, New Haven to Springfield, Philadelphia to Harrisburg and other short sections of tracks). Amtrak can be qualified as a "train operator" more than a "railroad" in most of the US. AND there are no direct trains from Virginia to Nevada...

You can take an Amtrak train from Washington, DC to Chicago and then connect to another one running to Reno, Nevada. There is no rail service into Las Vegas.
