It seems that lithium, MAOs, tricyclic and other medications helped depression before prozac and other selective seratonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) came along. If these other medications worked before the SSRIs, then why is seratonin regulation the only answer to depression?

Many people still take the old stuff. A lot of them have bad side effects though like weight gain and other things and SSRIs have less negative side effects. Another reason that doctors do not like to prescribe the old drugs is that it is possible to overdose on them (which is a risk amongst people with depression,) whereas you will not die from an overdose of an SSRI. Welbutrin and Effexor are newer and not SSRIs either.

I have taken both at the same time. pressure drugs are often benzodiazopines, jointly with Valium or such. they could reason a right away calming outcome(or interior say 1/2 an hour). Anti-depressants many times take time to enhance on your equipment. My well being care specialist stated it ought to take a week, 2 weeks, a month, or 6 months previously you particularly be conscious your mood has greater. relies upon on the med and the guy. in short, anti-anxieties receives you with the aid of the jiffy period (likely no extra that 10 days, or as needed), and anti depressants are used to make stronger your mood over the longer time period. do not hearken to anybody who says they are an same, or thinks you do not favor them.. they don't seem an same, and do not intervene with one yet another. One takes time to artwork, one artwork sfairly immediately. Your record will comprehend what's fantastic on your particulart project. My well being care specialist prescribed both, and yours ought to too in conserving with your project. it must be smart to take your prescription and use it in case you want it.

Many of the above answers are true. Treatment does depend on the patient, and sometimes older medications can be just as effective as the new ones. However, the older meds like lithium & MAOI's may have more side effects & food interactions. The MAOI's (ex parnate, nardil) also cause many drug interactions with Rx and even OTC medications.

Well, MAO's have a LOT of side effects, also you can't eat certain foods including chocolate, alcoholic beverages, Chianti and other aged wines, fish, and fermented foods such as sauerkraut, meat and yeast extracts, soy sauce, aged cheese, soy bean condiments, and processed meat, and the other medicines mentioned (lithium and tri-cyclics) have some really nasty side effects and aren't nearly as effective as the SSRI's

its not....each antidepressant still has an important role depending on the patients history. The SSRIs are just the newest and have the least amount of undesirable side-effect profiles when all antidepressants are considered.

Anti-depression meds never worked. They are a crutch for the weak who need an excuse and a money maker for drug companies.
