Nowhere in th old testement does it say that the two are the same.

In fact, nowherei n the old testement is satan EVER mentioned.

At the same time, there is NOWHERE in the old testament that says that Lucifer is satan.

There is also no place that says that there is such a place as hell.

So, why do Christians insist on making these false connections?

You are correct that the Eden story does not contain a reference to Satan. The snake is just a snake.

It is only in later writing that Satan gets associated with the snake --this happens during the inter-testamental literature and then is referred to by Paul in the New Testament. So, Paul is actually citing a non-canonical book when he refers to the serpent as Satan, not Genesis.

Satan as a proper name is not mentioned in the Old Testament as you say; however, "the satan" is mentioned several times. The satan was a member of the heavenly court and worked for God as the "blocker" or "obstacle" --sometimes in a preventative sense and sometimes as a deliberate challenge,as in the story of Job.

The story of Lucifer as well does not come from the Old Testament but rather from the pseudepigraphical book of Enoch.

So why do Christians have these beliefs?---what happens is a matter of "interpretive layering" --one idea is used to build on another and so on--finally the concept takes on a life of its own. The task of the scholar is to strip away these layers, as you have done, in order to find what the original intention of the writing may have been, and how this original writing may or may not have meaning for us today.

Very good question!!

I found that a College Bible was easier to understand. The words have the same meaning but our in our English language. Not how they used thou, yea, hath shew, etc. These are some easy ones but I can't think of the harder ones right now. When all put together sometimes I'm not quite sure of the meaning.I thought Lucifer was considered the devil or Satan. That he spoke through the snake. There are so many names used to describe Satan as we know today.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

why would people who believe in christ go strictly by the old testament which contains no mention of christ just think about that for a second

michaelowen- sorry i actually meant that the prophecies were the only mention of a savior we had no idea what he would do because even the apostles suspected different actions from christ they expected him to lead them to victory over the romans what i meant is that he isnt yet on earth yet so we couldnt have a christianity religion without the new testament we couldnt go strictly by the old testament

Excellent response by Resurrectionist!

Satan was not one person, but anyone who lures others to temptation. Satan is doing work in this room by filling some with evil thoughts in order to trip up believers and make them suffer.

Believers are promised eternal life with God after death.

Satan promises nothing. He recruits antagonists to promote his cause and then leaves them hanging...just like pyramid schemes, vacation clubs, timeshare clubs and Amway.

You can't win with Satan! He is out for himself! He is even laughing at you atheists when you are suffering!!!

Satan was the serpent. He can take different forms. I don't think that you've read much of the Bible - so I suggest that you spend the next year or so reading and studying so that you can carry on a factual conversation on what is and what isn't.

Satan in the bible isn't even a single entity. It simply means antagonist. Anyone who was the antagonist at the time was referred to as satan.
