The museams are awesome (and free). The monuments are cool. A lot of other neat things aren't actually in DC, but are in the nearby areas (i.e. Northern Virginia).
The city itself is a bunch of square streets. Letters run one way, numbers run the other. The National Mall is a giant field with the US Capitol on one end and the Washington Monument of the other.
All things considered, its a great place to visit; best to live or stay outside the city in the suburbs and its cheaper and safer. Even as a tourist, I'd stay at a nice hotel in Norther Virginia near a metro stop and take the metro into DC as a tourist. Parking in the city is no fun.

DC has a feel more like a larger town than a metropolitan city. The metro is clean, reliable (except when its 100 degrees outside) fairly cheap, most museums and all monuments are free. The city where you'll be is safe (be smart at the monuments at night now), there's food from all over the world, while stuff around the tourist destinations can be expensive, there's cheap food all over the city that isn't national chains. Staying in NoVa is wise...there's even Md as an option.

It's great. Get off the beaten path. Check out the Anacostia Museum, National Arboretum, and Rock Creek Park. DC has funky shops on U Street, in Adams Morganand near the Takoma metro.

the monuments and museums are excellent and free, and the subway system is clean and fairly reliable. This makes it a great city to visit. Otherwise it is a terrible place to live. Among the worst traffic and crime inb the country, it's expensive and the people are the rudest in the country.
