It happened twice that my nissan altima 1996 engine stoped during making a low-speed turn. Brought the car to a shop and found a knock sensor malfunctioning code. Is there any other reason that can cause the same thing and can I do the repair myself?

try going to a different gas station or using a higher octane. Most cheap fuel detonate before top dead center and knock sensor detect this and retard or advance timing to according. I'm not sure which engine you have 4cyl or 6 and not sure where nissan place this sensor but most of the knock sensor are placed on front engine block with two bolt.

There are lots of things that could cause this stalling problem but the smart thing is to replace the knock sensor. The knock sensor is usually mounted with a screw or small bolt to the side of the cylinder block, and it's usually easy to replace if you know where to look. For $20 or so, you can get a Haynes or Clymer manual for your car that will show the location of the knock sensor. Otherwise, if you don't know where to look, you better leave it to a mechanic.

You probably just need a new knock sensor, it's not unheard of for them to die after 10 years. Can you replace it yourself, I don't really know. Some engines it's a pretty easy thing to swap out, others are much harder, I don't know the specifics of yours.

there are several differences some time in 1997 Nissan changed the intake manifold and fuel injector plugs. Motors are the same and if you use your fuel, intake and exhaust system you can do the swap.
