To be a tourist there? They have MP security at all the gates - a couple of the gates are closed - since 9/11 because technically it is an active military base. There's some museums there, and Eisenhower (Ike) Hall has concerts and stuff, and there's sporting events - football games are HUGE. The grounds are gorgeous, but I don't know if they let anyone wander around them aimlessly anymore.
To be a student? You need to have a Congressional endorsement to be accepted. It's one of the top Universities in the county academically and those who graduate become military officers in the US Army. (I don't know what rank you go in as though.)
Oh, and there is some crime - just VERY little.

West Point is located in the country mountainside of New York. Nice area for hiking, & fishing. Don't let New York Fool ya. It is a wonderful area espesically in the fall. I would love to go to school there. No crime like the city.

If a career in Miltary as an Officer is what you want. it is totally the way to go.
