if you're not getting drunk and non-christians aren't watching?

2006-08-14 08:07:21 · 28 answers · asked by Sandy 2 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

Drinking in front of non-christians would give them a mis-guided view of christians and just another thing to ignorantly attack us on. That's why there's a reference to doing it in front of non-christians.

JimB- I'm not into any "religion". I'm saved by Jesus. And I know that you can't get into heaven by doing works. Doesn't Jesus say that you should LOVE others? And be KIND to others? Your response to my question dod not make me feel loved or treated kindly. I only wanted to get other kind and loving christian opinions because the bible does not say that drinking is a sin. I have and do read my bible daily...BTW.

Christ never said that we could not drink, but that is not to say that it mught be wrong for you. We should not drink if it will stumble someone also. The Word does say that wine (drink) can certaintly lead to sin and has several things to say about it.

Proverbs 20:1
Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

Proverbs 23:19-21
19 Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way. 20 Do not mix with winebibbers, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; 21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

Proverbs 23:30-32
30 Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine. 31 Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly; 32 At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper.

Ephesians 5:17-19
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

Romans 14:21
It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak.

1 Corinthians 8:13
Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

Etc, Etc, Etc.....

People back then drank wine for health reasons. It was safer to drink wine than water. The achohol in the wine killed bacteria.

Personal opinion...Drinking is of the world, and we are to seperate ourselves from what the world does. Hope this helps...

actually it is ok. In the Bible it states that you should drink wine, though not to get drunk, but because it is good for the body. Science has coincided with that as alcohol helps clean the toxins in the body. I can give you the verse later, however im slacking at work and dont have my Bible with me. I however have it marked in it at home just for these occasions. It never says do not drink it in public either. it wont make you look bad, and the only people it might make u look bad to are ignorant people who dont know the Bible well enough. just dont go getting drunk. (although it says not to do things that may cause others to sin, so its saying dont drink if people around u are alcoholics and ur drinking will make them drink) now the question u can ask urself when is enough enough? bible says not to get drunk? but how far buzzed can u be? or can u not be buzzed? (in my personal belief of this, once u cant control your actiosn coherently you become more prone to comitting a sin and thus that is why you shouldnt drink to become drunk)

Okay, here's my deal about alcohol. Are you of the legal age to drink? If you aren't, then you are disobeying the laws of your land and that is sinning. If you are of the age to drink, drinking a little is okay as long as you are not being a stumbling block to someone. Say a non-christian is watching and they say 'there is a christian drinking, they aren't being a good example so we can drink all we want too'. You just want to be cautious with it. Make sure others know where you stand on it.

Peace in Christ!

There's a Scripture that says something to the effect that "A little wine is good for the infirmities of the stomach." I'm not sure how that would go over today because though wine was a symbol of purity and wine was actually more pure than the water used to filter it back then, when you overindulge, it becomes sin and we as Christians are to "abstain from the very appearance of evil". I'm not sure we can justify it.

If you are so self conscience about taking a drink that you have to not let people see you it is wrong. If you can take a drink and not worry about it being wrong and you don't care if someone sees you, I don't see that as a problem. Jesus drank wine regularly, it isn't a sin..Tell you what give up this religion stuff and enter into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He has made me free from sin and guilt. I still wouldn't do anything in my life that I wouldn't do if He was standing right there beside me (because He is). Almost sounds like you are trying to do good works to earn your salvation... STOP THAT!! Jim

There is nothing in the Word of God that says not to drink alcohol. However, I do not drink personally, because I don't like it to start with, and I would not wish to be a stumbling block to anyone else. This is my own personal choice, as another reason why I don't drink alcohol is that I have an alcoholic brother and son, and I have seen first hand the devastation that the use of alcohol has brought to my family.

I am a born again believer and I have a glass of wine with supper on occasion, or when the occasion is a festive celebration, wedding, birth of a child etc. There is nothing wrong with that. Abusive drinking, drinking to get drunk, makes a person out of control and out of the will of God.

Drinking is ok, drinking to excess is wrong. Remember, the seven deadly sins are mearly human actions taken to excess.

So yes, taking an occasional drink is ok.

As for who to drink in front of, just remember your actions reflect upon your religion. Be responsible, to use an old phrase.

If the alcohol becomes a habit it will vex your soul. It might not be a sin for you. But it would be a sin for me since I was an alcoholic until 5 years ago. Just one drink of beer would put me out of the grace of God.

If you are a born again christian then you should know what the Bible says about it. So if God says "no", then is it ok? Besides that, the wine that Jesus refers to in the Bible is not fermented. you would discover this if you study it carefully.
