The absolute best way for your to learn japanese would be to spend a year or two teaching english there, and pick it up/learn it while you're over there. There are many programs and schools offering such trips, I highly recommend it. Do some google searches to find specific programs. As for plane tickets, you're looking at hundreds of dollars each way.

Everyone told me to listen to Japanese people, listen to tapes, etc.
What I did was look at books just about how to pronouce words (Not read or write yet). Personally I prefere the "dummies" book. Also I listened to tapes, (You can get them at your local book store) Also I looked online for the language. The hardest part about the langauge is the reading and writting.
I can understand about 1/3 of a sentance from just teaching myself for about a year and also I'm about your age if that can give you any reference...

Here are some words that you may want to know...

hello, konnichiwa

good bye, sayonara

how are you, o-genki desu ka

nice to meet you, hajimashite (and if you want to sound more japanese say yoroshiku with it) (yoroshiku means please be nice to me)

The grammer is not that hard if you think about it, Subject Object Verb, or SOV english is an SVO language (exapmle; mather brought bread would be in japanese grammer, mother bread bought)

Also be open to everything!!! Grammer especially!

AND LEARN HOW TO PRONOUCE FIRST!

(If you really, I mean, REALLY want to spend your money and learn go to berlitz [search for them online] they are the best! But lessons are about $3000! But they do offer software that is about $150)

(And sorry if I didn't spell some words right in japanese)

A good web site is also word2word.com you can learn practically any language there.
