Go to the card store or if you have one near you a dollar store and either buy a theme invitation or check out the wording till you find one that fits the type of party you are having and write it down. You can make your own invites with white copy paper or get fancy with construction paper. Draw a picture on the front or have your child color the front of the invite. (Family member's will love to keep a child's drawing - probably end up on a few fridge's)
Good luck and enjoy your party.

It depends on the theme... and what your child might be interested in, or just something everyone can enjoy or has in common. But here's a sample of one I have planned for my son when my husband comes back from Iraq:
Soldier ________ is leading his 3rd birthday celebration. You, _________, have been invited to enlist for this secret mission. Details listed below... please bring enclosed dog tag with secret password... as well as a small $5.00 donation for our MWR. Thank You and hope to see you there!!!
Date: 04 October 2007
Time: 15:00 - 16:30
Location: Soldier _____'s residence
That's what I have so far, but I think it still needs some work. I think it's more fun and will get the other kids excited if you make it look like they are actually part of the whole process, as opposed to just plain old guests, required to bring a gift, eat the food, play, then leave... bore!!! Anyway, I plan on including dog tags with the invitations and a random army word on the back as a password. It's gonna be pretty cool. I want to have the back yard covered in camo, like a jungle operation sort of thing. With canteents, compasses, and buckets of toy soldiers, etc. and instead of a gift we'll request a small $5.00 donation to our local MWR program. Anyway, hope your child's birthday's a blast. But try to keep it under 2 hours, otherwise the kids'll get bored. That way you can just jam-pack the activities or have the group divided into age groups and rotate stuff to do. Good Luck!!!

What is the theme for the party? I can help out with a little more information.
My son is having a John Deere themed party for his 3rd birthday. On the front of the card I put "Haul on Over" (which had grass and a huge John Deere tractor sticker on it). Then in the inside I put "Calling all farmers, short and tall, Corben's 3rd birthday is sure to be a ball." Then I added the where, when, RSVP, etc.

A cute idea for a party is to take a digital photo of your child with a sign in the background that says the date, time and place of the party. People will have a cute invitation as well as get the pertinent facts. You can even incorporate your child's theme into the photo... cowboy party? Have your child wear a western costume. Pooh fan? Have him wear a Pooh outfit/costume. Be creative!
