I just got through answering you Focus question & I'll tell you the same holds true for the Escape as far as supply & demand for a 2001
on This question though, I'll have to correct a few of the other answerers:
The Escape is built on a sedan chasis or frame & it is available with 2 engine choices , 4 cyl & 6 cyl
It was (2001) available in either front wheel drive, or 'on demand' 4 wheel drive.

It is not made by Mazda for Ford.
Ford owns Mazda
Mazda makes the Tribute, which is the 'sister' to the Escape

and note to Silly M...
Escapes never had a tire issue, I think you are referring to the FIRESTONE fiasco, which was original tires used on some Explorers & Ford replaced all of the firestone tires with other brands.

Engine is usually a 3.0 24v v-6 that as others have said drinks gas a little but has very good power and are real good reliability. Same as the CD4E transmission that's usually the standard automatic.

Only problem is some of the suspension will get weak over time and the original tires wore out real quick due to the soft tread on them.. but pretty relaible even though they do have a feel more like a go-cart for me personally than a car.

Had an excape XLT. Loved it. No problems at all. Was in an accident in it. Got rearended by a Dodge Ram and was pushed in to a Ford 350, the airbags deployed and It was a very safe vehicle. I was able to walk away alive and with nothing broken. Very safe and good on gas.

I have a 2005 XLT 4x4 Escape and I love it. However, be sure to look around at other SUV's. I only looked at same class, but should have looked at all as the Xterra was the same price but much more powerful.

I love my 2005 Escape, but the gas mileage isn't very good with the V6 engine 4WD, only about 16 mpg. Goes great in snow, however.

Made for Ford by Mazda. As good as any other car based SUV.
