The big sin that condemned us all was Eve eating from the tree of KNOWLEDGE (I know it was of 'good' & 'evil' but doesn't that cover...most things?) Lucifer means 'bringer of light' (I've always understood that 'light' and knowledge' are the same in Xian terms) and he's the 'bad guy'

Wow. You Xians should agree on your myths!
To: billcompugeek-are you going to explain what God means? Isn't that what led to the Crusades, Inquisition, etc.?Somebody 'explaining' verses in the 'Good Book'? as far as 'man-made religions go-Xianity is one' polytheism existed b4 Xianity-at the same time as OT stories-not before. Nature religions-people act accordimng to natural events so where is the 'made up' part to that? As far as God is evil/out to get us...some may think that but there would have to first be a god for it to be a him or evil
koresh419-scientists conduct tests and gain knowledge to see what works ('or is 'good') or not (bad'). Btw, how would Eve know that God was the 'sole moral arbiter' and not a talking snake?
aayiahh1213-...then God blamed Eve for tempting Adam and therefore all women were condemned to suffer childbirth...of course 'knowledge' of painkillers now can help with that

garfield-consequence was death (to say God wasn't lying, we have to ASSUME mortals were immortal). Adam & Eve were tempted by a talking snake-Bible says nothing about it being Satan. If you're wet & cold, to save you fromn getting sick and/or dying, you need KNOWLEDGE of how to warm yourself. If Lucifer was in Heaven originally, how could he want more?
Dane 62-but we have KNOW (or most agree) that pornography is 'bad', and most people have the KNOWLEDGE to decide when and what would be appropriate so thew argument would still be KNOWLEDGE is necesary to our lives. So, we all should automatically assume that 'His' knowledge is best? I think you may find argument to that. The original word is 'Da'ath'? Don't we need knowledge of other languages? If we all had the same perception, there goes the free will argument.
Since the question assumes there is a God, He would also lead us to believe a bunch of stories there's no proof of are 'Truth'. ...

Dane62: I heard that 'he' was Lucifer in Heaven, Satan after the fall but nothing about any new angels taking care of the missing 'light' (knowledge?)
rac:Do you study for tests by going to Sunday School and then praying for the right answer? Aren't there plenty of professors, scientists, mathmeticians, etc. that have a ton of knowledge that say their knowledge doesn't point to a Muddle Eastern concept of a singular God? In your answer you said we have to have knowledge to choose between good & evil. Why the 'tree of knowledge' story. Unless you 'have it all wrong', you're justifying my argument.
Cookie777: Wow. What a lot of assumptions you make. Why would an all-powerful, all-knowing deity make a food we could not digest properly? IUf Eve didn't have the knowledge of right & wrong, why would God expect her to know following him was 'ggod' and doing what a talking snake said was 'bad' (and in your numerous years of SS & the Talmudge book-who said/assumed the snake was Lucifer?)

churchmusicgirl: how to choose whjether it was good or evil to disobey God or talking snakes? Didn't mean to imply Lucifer was involved in this particuar story-just that his name could mean 'bringer of knowledge'
SK: Self-reliance is great but the 'thirst for the unsatiable quest for more & more knowledge' has doe a ton of good. In medicine, especially. I do agree that trying to acquire too much knowledge can be destructive. But knowledge is necessary unless we are mindless robots w/o free choice.
Grandreal: I would like more knowledge but I feel relatively comfortablethat I already have some. Thanks for the concern!

When Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge it made us descendents thirst for the unsatiable quest for more and more knowledge which God knows will do us no good ultinately. It causes greed and hatred, etc. Therefore, God advice was to simply obey his commandments and He will provide for our needs.
Perhaps, Lucifer being the "Bringer of Light" wants to empower us with self knowledge so that eventually we could rely on our own understanding of our being and be self-supportive. In this sense, Lucifer is the guiding light for humanity. But then again, we don't really know what the Bible said to be correct translations from centuries past.
Things being what there are now, we should attempt to re-discover our own-being and not really just reply upon God. We could however ask for his guidance and help along the way.
Be well.

It is not knowledge that God hates. He forbade Adam and Eve from eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because it was a different kind of fruit from what their bodies were accustomed to. It was a lower level of physical matter that would effect a change on their bodies and introduce death and entropy in general into the world. God could not command Adam and Eve to eat the fruit, because God cannot command someone to choose death and the possibility of sinning. It had to be a choice. He respected Adam and Eve's free agency. Satan or Lucifer tried to convince Eve that the only consequence of eating the fruit would be to experience knowledge, but he said there would be no physical consequences of death (either spiritual or temporal). It was not a consequence of anyone hating knowledge, but rather a consequence of eating a fruit made of a different kind of matter that introduced sin and death into the world. That is why the Fall in the Garden of Eden was referred to as a transgression - Eve and Adam transgressed one law (a command not to eat the fruit) in order to later fulfill a higher law (to multiply and replenish the earth and to grow to know the difference between good and evil).
By the way, Lucifer's original name indicates that he was an extremely intelligent individual in the beginning, not that he actually brings light to anyone anymore. He is now called Satan because that connotes a different meaning.

You have it all wrong. Yes, Lucifer was a child of light but he rebelled against the light and became the father of darkness, spirituall speaking. God and Christ are the source of knowledge and truth. No man can be saved in ignorance. Light and knowledge are the acretion of spirit and intelligence and the more knowledge, light and truth we obtain in this life, we will have so much the advantage in the life to come. It behooves each of us to seek for truth and knowledge from all sources. The truth from the Holy Ghost is the greatest source of truth available to us. That is obtained through study and prayer and the subsequent inspiration that we feel in our hearts and minds. We cannot choose to follow the Savior if we have not learned about Him and His teachings. Likewise, we need to choose between good and evil all of our life and that can only be done by making a life long habit of learning and gaining more and more light and knowledge.
Best wishes.

First of all even if the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil did give real, truthful information think of it like this.

Is it Good for a 4 year old to see pornography? It would give them more knowledge about sex right? So by your logic any parent who doesn't let their children watch pornography or even experiment with sex, which would also give them more knowledge about it, is a bad parent.

Just like a reasonable parent knows learning certain things to early is not good for their child. God knew learning about Good and Evil right away without his care and guidance was not good for us.

Another issue to consider is perhaps there is another reason the tree had this name the word translated "Da`ath" can also mean perception ( see first source) so perhaps instead of actual knowledge it affected the perception of Good and Evil for Adam and Eve.

It's also possible it was named for a test it was intended to perform. It was the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil because it test to find out if man would be inherently Good ( obedient to God) or Evil (Rebellious against God).

I can't say for sure what the reason for the name is but I do know the God of the bible does not hate Truth which is the only relevant Knowledge. ( I can support this with verses if you're interestd.)

As far as Lucifer's name, he received this name before he betrayed God so it's entirely possible his role at that time was to bring light.

Actually, that isn't quite right. The sin of Adam and Eve was disobedience towards God. God laid out his law very clearly, they understood it, but they choose to disobey.

The name "Lucifer" is not connected to this story, so you really can't connect that meaning to this story. Doing so is forcing a meaning and contect onto the story that wasn't originally there.

God doesn't hate. Period.

No, knowledge of good and evil does not cover other knowledge. It does not cover scientific knowledge in any way (unless you can show me a scientist who thinks that his field is just a subset of the knowledge of good and evil)

The sin was the attempt to make oneself the sole moral arbiter, to cast aside God and one's dependence on God to try and make oneself God. That was the original sin, that is the underlying driving force behind all sin.

Religions hate knowledge. They only want you to learn what they teach and how they teach it to you... that way they have more control over you.

But if you are going by the Bible itself, there's a few verses in there accredited to God, saying "my people perish for lack of knowledge"... pretty much stating that they are being lead astray because of their lack of knowledge.

So I would blame the lack of knowledge on religions themselves.

God does not hate knowledge...
the big sin.. was..
that adam and eve was commanded not to eat from the tree of knowledge by God... and God also tell them the consequences of doing so..
and adam and eve was tempted by satan...
that they also want to be like God to be able to differential good and bad...
and they ate... therefore we are condemmed..through them

Satan.. was the biggest angel in heaven...
until.. one day he wanted to be the same with His creator/God..
therefore God banish him down.. from heaven..

It means mankind's self knowledge (the made-up stuff like believing in different Gods or nature as God or believing that God is evil and out to get us and other such nonsense).

I don't know if God hates knowledge but religious leaders surely hate us acquiring it. The more knowledge we have the faster and better we see through their crapola. This translates into less donations and status for them.
