Some recipes for rum balls may call for dipping them in melted chocolate. Paraffin (which is used to make candles and also for sealing the tops of homemade jellies) can be melted with the chocolate to make the coating shiny and to help it harden. They are perfectly tasty just rolled in cocoa powder instead of being dipped in chocolate. If you choose to dip your rum balls and don't want to use the paraffin, you will need to make sure to temper the chocolate by melting most of it then stirring in the last chip s off the heat. If you chill the balls first the chocolate should set up fine - although it might not be shiny!

The recipe I have used did not have any parafin wax in it.

Here's a link to the recipe I have used before.

I wouldn't want to eat anything that's been dipped in paraffin wax. It's actually used to put the food on so that it will harden and not stick to anything.

I think you're talking about wax paper or parchment paper

parchment paper is for cooking

wax paper is for setting - do not put wax paper in oven it will melt

that's strange. i've never heard of that before. i i've made rum balls with walnuts, nilla wafers, brandy, rum ... sugar ... no wax though.

i don't think they're supposed to be dipped either. in my experience, you just roll them in sugar.
