Unfortunately, though I really like them, too, I don't know who invented the crouton, but I would like to point out that as the word following "Whom" is a verb (invented), it should be "WHO invented the salad crouton?"

"Whom" is only used when the word following it is a noun.

crouton (KROO-tawn) - The French culinary name for a small piece of bread (usually cube or dice shaped), which has been browned by toasting, baking, or frying. Croutons are used as a garnish or an accompaniment for everything from soup to salads.
crouton taste great in salads :p

I love them as well! They were most likely invented in France because, according to Wikipedia: "The word crouton is derived from the French word "croûte" meaning "crust".

I don't know who did...but I am sure glad they did......I love them in all kinds of things......on salad..in soups, especially french onion......I crumble them for breading on things like fish and chicken.......YUMMY !!!!
