First off, don't beat yourself up over this. There is a really big divide between people like you that try to improve physically and those that simply give up.

You will not put on weight if you burn up more calories than you take in in a day. It's that simple.

I suggest you buy a guide book. I have one callled 'calorie counter' and it only cost 1.99p. It lists the calories in almost all foodstuffs. Take the time to read it & understand the concepts involved (maybe 2 hours).

Once you understand this, it is up to you how to burn up your calories in any day - gym, swimming, running, cycling, karate, walking to town etc. It can be done.

With the smoking, dont be too hard on yourself. I reckon that once you start doing another activity, smoking will loose it's appeal anyway. But you need to start doing some activity either with a group or alone.

good luck & don't ever give up trying!!

Are you a competitive person who is motivated to succeed at whatever you set your mind to? Become a runner.

Start walking for 30 minutes 5 times per week. Mix in as much slow jogging as is comfortable. After a few weeks you'll be able to progress up to 30 minutes or more of continuous running. You can do it on a treadmill or better yet to combat the boredom take it outside.

Set a goal. Look into a local running race a few months from now. There are lots of places to look. I use www.marathonguide.com which also lists race distances other than marathons. Find a good training program to prepare you for that race. I suggest visiting www.halhigdon.com as a starter. Work toward your goal using the training guide to ensure you finish the race.

You'll genuinely want to stop smoking when trying to get your endurance and speed up to your goal(s). You'll want to eat food to fuel your energy requirements. Weekly mileage burns calories and increases your metabolic rate -- you'll eat more AND loose weight (or keep it off).

Start talking to other runners about your running. When you talk to others about running, the focal point will be successes. People will talk about which distances they have been successful at running. What times they have achieved. Which training methods and programs have been successful for them. All the kinds of success oriented discussions that will help you acheive your own goals.

It's probably worse for you to be bulimic than it is for you to smoke - bearing in mind with bulimia your body won't get the nourishment it needs and your teeth are likely to rot.

Saying that - have you tried hypnotherapy for giving up smoking as I have heard good reports. Also try chewing gum, snacking on things like celery, rice cakes etc.

I guess you have to take a long term view and go through the pain for the sake of your future health BUT don't make yourself sick as that's counterproductive.

Just to be safe - if you can, without messing up your recovery - start eating more healthily right before you start smoking. Exercising would also help - just to get in the habit of it.

Try eating something that requires a lot of 'putting in your mouth' action - like sunflower seeds or chewing on ice. You could also try a nicotine patch.

Good luck - you can do it!

Try the patch and sunflower seeds. Gum doesn't work because your body wants the hand to mouth action... so anything that doesn't have many calories or fat in it that you can eat a lot of will work. Good Luck... your breath and hair will thank you!

i sujest you quit again but try suger free gum to chew on. if this makes you hungry then keep your mind occupied. Go on a jog but wear a bin bag to sweat all the bad stuff out of your body. this is what i did and it works wonders. and i still eat all the good stuff. just cut down on the sugar in your tea and on you breakfast. and drink pleanty of water.
