Sanhedrin

"Sanhedrin" - (m., pl. "Sanhedriyaot") - 1. the Jewish "Supreme Court;" it consisted of seventy one great Torah Sages, who met in the "Lishkat HaGazit," the "Office of Hewn Stone," adjacent to the Temple in Jerusalem; 2. The Masechta, or Folio of the Talmud that discusses the activities of the Sanhedrin, and related matters.

The Rabbis who were the members of the Sanhedrin had all received "Semichah," the formal passing over of the Tradition from their teachers.

On the floor of the Sanhedrin were debated the fundamental principles of the Torah, and the result was established by majority vote.

Cases that were the most difficult or the most critical for the Jewish People were decided by the Sanhedrin. A majority had to be at least two votes. Any Capital case in which all the votes were for condemnation, was automatically changed to acquittal.

There is discussion in the Talmud of the question of how frequently capital punishment was imposed by the Sanhedrin, although the Torah does explicitly allow for it. Some said that a Sanhedrin that imposed the death penalty once in seven years was considered "bloody;" another opinion is that it was seventy years. Another said that it depended on the generation. Yet another was that restraint in imposing the death penalty would increase the number of murderers in Israel.

After the Temple was destroyed, the Sanhedrin moved from place to place in Israel. It finally was dissolved when, in the absence of the greatest Sages of Israel, the Institution of Semichah could no longer be applied.

During the Middle Ages, there was an attempt to revive the Sanhedrin by re-instituting Semichah. But due to opposition by some of the Torah Sages of that generation, the idea never became a reality.

From what I understand the Dome of the Rock is where the old temple stood with the outer and inner courts and the holy of holies. The Sanhedrin was the Jewish high council that basically worked as a judicial system, where they operated may have been within the temple, I'm not sure. The temple has to be rebuilt for some of the prophecies in Revelation to be fulfilled. Hope this helps.

First what is the Sanhedrin? According to this definition, it is a group of people.
"The highest judicial and ecclesiastical council of the ancient Jewish nation, composed of from 70 to 72 members."
In biblical times, they met in the tent of meeting.
In 2004, they met at the temple Mount and there has been some discussion of a meeting place being made at that location, but your question is the first I have heard anything more....It could be built along side the Dome of the Rock.......

There have actually been lots of sanhedrins. The Grand Sanhedrin, relevant to me and my work, and well known to students of French history, was called on the orders of Napoleon to ascertain whether Jewish law and customs were compatible to his new Civil Code. And, implicitly, whether for the first time, Jews could be citizens.

The Grand Sanhedrin called together the greatest Jewish scholars of the time, and they decided that Jews could be governed by the Civil Code. The significance of that follows to our time.

In Algeria, Muslims became Français Musulmans, French nationals but not citizens (the USA had, indeed has, such a concept, but today it is limited to natives of American Samoa and Swain Island). Jews were citizens of France; in 1962 they remained so; Muslims (with some exceptions) became citizens of Algeria.

But you ask about a different Sanhedrin, to be called according to Scripture at a theoretical time in a theoretical forum.

American evangicals have a milenarian outlook. Their focus on Israel and on Jews is with a view to the Second Coming of Jesus, the Armageddon and the Rapture. You might look to the site below for some insight on that; whatever its historical or prognostic accuracy, it certainly sells a lot or books.

Probably some christian terrorist group will blow it up to help along their version of biblical prophecy.

And you need to study a little more, the Sanhedrin in a judiciary body, not a physical building. It is the Jewish Temple that Apocalyptic oriented fanatics want to build in place of the Dome on the Rock.

The Dome of the Rock is where the Holy of Holies would be. The Sanhedrin has no designated location.

I am not sure what the Sanhedrin is, but the Dome of the Rock is where the Prophet Mohammed(PBUH) landed on laylat al Qadr. This is a very important place. Muslims are supposed to make pilgremige here once in their life, if they can, and only after they make Hajj in Messa, If they can....

What? The Sanhedrin are getting their own building? I've always understood the Sanhedrin as being the Supreme Court of the Jews. If you'd clarify I'd appreciate it..

The sanhedrin is a group of law enforcers, the temple is what will be rebuilt on the Dome when it's gone, which of course, it will have to get gone somehow, but no clue how.
