My cat has been acting very strange recently. Whenever we pick him up he breaks wind, his poos are very runny. Also, whenever we pick him up we notice him bum is wet and he is always licking his bum. Could you tell us what the matter is and how we could treat it please.

Your cat is Ill... and needs to see a vet... at least CALL one and describe the symptoms... They are best qualified to tell you what it may be or what you can do (if anything) about it... and the sooner the better...

Sounds like cheap cat food. Try some more pricey cat food like IMS or Science Diet, this should get the cats fecal matter to harden up a bit, because I believe what is wrong with your cats bum is the anal sacs need to be expressed. Apparently when a cat goes "poo" the fecal matter pushes past the sacs and releases a smelly mucus on their poo, that's how cats can distinguish territories. If you are not brave enough to put on a pair of latex gloves and push in and around their anus you will need to take the cat to the vet and have them expresses.

There can be soooo many causes. At vet visit would be best to determine the exact cause. Cheap, low quality foods can cause loose stools. So can a change in food. Worms are also a cause. Worms can also cause itching. Cats really should be kept on a regular worming schedule. They can pick up parasites from mice, birds, etc. that they like to hunt.
I suggest a visit to the vet to assure your cat is healthy.

Your kitty could have a tummy ache from his food. Sometimes they get an upset stomach just from their food. If he has been outside he could have worms from various creatures. You would definitely notice worms. They look like flat pieces of rice. If your kitty gets worse take him to the vet. In the meantime here is a recipe for pet diarrhea.
2 Parts Hamburger (Browned)
1 Part Boiled Rice
1/2 Part Cottage Cheese
1/2 Part Live Cultured Yogurt (Plain)

I hope your kitty feels better!

you don't say what age your cat is...?

if he's very old then it could be that he's on his way to that big ol' mousehunting ground in the sky...you should see a vet to see if there's anything that can be done to ease his way.

if he's not old, then take him to a vet as soon as possible. i have no idea what's wrong but i think it's fair to assume that your cat's not in good health and if he's got the skitters and then licking his bum i think it's also fair to assume it's going to be a vicious circle of bugs...coming out one end and going back in the other.

it may indeed just be worms, but those need sorting out too. if you don't have a vet locally or can't afford one, contact your local pdsa (people's dispensary for sick animals) and they will ensure that he is at least diagnosed properly.

First off I would say it would be hard for anyone to tell you for sure with out knowing more and/or seeing the cat. Second if you changed his food it could be a reaction. Third take him to the vet. If his poo is not looking good and he is acting funny, not playful or strange to his care takers he could have worms or anything. I say VET. Poor kitty. Good Luck! >^..^<

Your cat needs to go the vet ASAP.

He has some internal problem and that must not be messed with. My cat recently cried in pain every time we picked him up, so we immediately took him to the vet and we found out he had urine crystals that had him totally backed up so he couldn't urinate at all. He spent the night at the Vet's clinic and after some antibiotics (he also had a urinary tract infection) and saline IV, he's totally fine now. (However, his hair hasn't grown back yet, so his mom and brother still hiss at him...)

Change the diet completely.
Avoid standard cat food - its full of rubbish.
Try fresh fish, and fresh meat, probably uncooked. Avoid milk for a while. If its an outside cat, and not been dewormed recently, get some worm powders.
Its either diet or worms in my guess

Sounds like worms to me. A wet bum usually is.
