Hello,

I want to live in NJ - as close to NYC as I can get without actually having to bear the high living expenses and high crime. Any suggestions on a city in NJ that has direct access to NYC (train, subway) without moving there and doesn't havea high crime rate? I also don't own a car and don't want to buy one.

I agree that NJ is expensive, rethink it for sure. Queens is becoming much nicer and attracting a lot of people who're looking for affordability (relative) and convenience of the NYC subway into the city. Safety or lack thereof is not so much an issue in the following...1) Astoria
2)Jackson Heights and 3) Kew Gardens. Forest Hills is a bit more expensive but not crazy...great area! Commute times are 30 minutes or so. Take a ride out on the subway sometime. Take the N/W train to the Broadway or Astoria Blvd stops for Astoria. The E/F to Kew Gardens or the E/F/G/R/V trains to Jackson Heights and Forest Hills.

New Jersey is not inexpensive to live in, but it's not the highest either. Housing cost is highest with the shortest commute(Unless you don't mind lesser areas). There are only a few cities/towns that I would recommend you stay away from. For the most part New Jersey doesn't have a high crime rate. NJ Transit's train & bus service can get you into the city from most parts of the state pretty easy. Commutes would range from 90-15 minutes depending on area. You're smart not to want to drive into the NYC, the normal Hudson River crossings are bad on good days. If you're working in the city, you should be making decent money. Look into Bergen, or Union county for semi-affordable housing. At least the electricity is more dependable in Jersey.

NJ is by no means cheap. House down the street here less than a mile from the NYC train goes for over $1 million.

If you want to go with towns near the trains, check the stops on the NJ Transit train lines. www.njtransit.com

there is no place in nj that is cheap.... your better off looking somewhere in brooklyn, queens or the bronx. you would like to have a car living in nj, there are trains in nj... but not the subway which runs every couple minutes to any other borough.

Why Jersey???
Live in one of the Boroughs. Jersey is neither cheap or safe, compared to parts of Brooklyn, Queens or Bronx.

Rethink big time.
