It's just like you saying Mom or someone saying Mama when the word is MOTHER. They are just using a shortened version of the word, but they say Mum, and they DO spell it with a U. And if you say, well there is not a U in Mother, well in Mama (the generic "first word" of children) there is an A and no A in Mother. Why don't you just stop complaining and do something more productive and better with your life than asking dumbass question like this on Yahoo!Answers.

Because the "mum" is a noun meaning "secrecy" and "mom" is a noun meaning "mother" and the phrase "Mum's the word" means "Don't tell anyone."

Edited after question was appended:
If you're trying to ask why some people use "mum" to mean "mom," it's because "mum" is the proper informal dialect for "mother" in certain regions of the English speaking world, just as "mom" is the proper informal dialect for "mother" in the U.S.

It's not annoying, it's just the way it is.

Because it IS MUM and not Mom. Mum means to keep quiet.... so Mum's the word means you won't say anything. It has nothing at all to do with your mother.

No.
I never used it until knowing more about British folk, but I find it personal now. For me, to say "my mum" or "your mum" gives much more sentimental meaning.

I come from an area where saying mum (referring to mother and not being quiet) is not common place. But now it is for me. I don't even hesitate to say mum.

To each their own.
