I just got a King Charles Spaniel...12 weeks old. I was told to keep it on a strict diet of puppy feed. How old does he need to be to eat treats?

Did the vet tell you to keep him on a diet? I would definitely talk to the vet about it. I see no problems with giving him a treat though.

Parvo is a very deadly disease but it doesn't mean that all dogs who catch it are assigned a certain death. With accurate and serious medical attention dogs can pull through Parvo and the good news is, that if your dog makes it through, it won't have to worry about it again as it's body will be completely immune to the virus. The #1 killer of dogs with Parvo is dehydration. Parvo attacks the digestive system stripping the lining of the intestines off and causing irritation. Dogs with Parvo have soupy stool/diarrhea and this will dehydrate the dog fast, as well as vomiting. The vomiting coupled with diarrhea will cause serious dehydration, so the dog needs to KEEP DOWN WATER. Keep the dog hydrated. Giving the dog pedialyte or Gatorade is good as well as water. Monitor him consistently and if he shows any signs of sickness or seems as if he's getting sicker GET HIM TO THE VET. Your dog luckily has age on his side. The older the puppy the less likely the virus is to kill, at 4 months of age your dog as a very good chance of pulling through.

it doesnt really matter how old the dog is as long as it is easy to eat and they are used as a treat only and not on a regular basis. Some vets recommend keeping treats away from puppies as they can start to refuse their normal food, but as a every few days thing its fine, and you will find most puppy schools use them for training purposes with puppies being able to commence training at 16weeks.

He can eat dog treats now. Try to pick treats that are a little more healthy than some on the market. Old Mother Hubbard makes biscuits in various flavours that are very healthy.

He needs to get treats to learn his commands of sit and stay. They do have puppy size treats he doesn't need great big ones. As long as he is not eating only biscuits or treats you will be fine. I can get 8 week puppies to sit on command for treats.

i suggest you comment a vet about this
you should remember not to over feed it with treats
allways read the label for weight suggestions
