I frequently fly for my job. This past week I had to endure the longest wait for a plane to board (it was only a 737, not a big one) because not just three or four people, but at least 10 brought luggage aboard as a carry on.

The flight crew went beyond all expectation of service to acommodate these customers, including giving some passengers garbage bags so they could remove clothing reducing the bulk of their luggage.

I have a medium sized roll on, just beyond the dimensions accepted as a carry on, and I always check it because the one time I didn't they wouldn't board me with it. Some of these people had bags that were small suitcases and they tried to shove it into the overhead bins.

The airlines all have regs for the maximum carryon size permitted. Why don't they enforce them uniformly? Why do I always follow the rules like a schoolgirl afraid to get in trouble? And don't the people who break those rules realize just how rude they are by inconveniencing others?

I understand your feelings and share them.

We live in a society in which people think it is a sign of being clever or superior to ignore the rules. They have become so self centered that they cannot see beyond their own petty wants.

The people you describe are selfish, self centered, arrogant filth and are the single most important reason that everyone's quality of life is degraded in the modern world.

They are morally inferior to even a terrorist (who may be wrong but who acts out of political or religious conviction) because their disregard for the rights of others is based on nothing more important than their own trivial desire.

This is kind of like doing the speed limit (or something close to it)... and it seems like everyone is passing you. First, you don't know how many people might be travelling the same speed as you 'cause you'll never see them. In an airplane that seats 100 or so though... in your case... at least 90% of the folks were following the rules. The other thing about that is you really don't know the other people's circumstances. How many times they've been caught for speeding... made to check their luggage.. or whatever.

As your experience shows.. the consequences for breaking the rules once are possibly not very grave. I think that if you ignore them all the time though... it eventually catches up with you. Too many speeding tickets, your insurance goes up.. your license gets revoked.. whatever. Too many times on the plane.. who knows? Some kind of extra security screening. Cavity search, maybe. Not to mention the people around you thinking you're a jerk.

I feel the same way. The way I look at it is that although I see people all around me breaking all kinds of rules, if I try to break one of these rules I WILL get caught. Since I dont have the luxury of 'getting away with things', I just have to follow the rules even though others dont.

It doesnt even eat at me anymore. It actually is comforting knowing that I dont have to remember where and when I can get away with what.

The worst is Southwest where people who have no problems sneak into the special assistance line. I will never fly that airline after I saw how they let people cut ahead of others. Airlines only care about getting people on the plane and making a buck. Southwest after I watch that bs happened won't be making a buck off of me again.

I know how you feel. I think you should keep doing the right thing. Set an example for other people. If you just break rules as well then things would only get worse. If you always do the right thing, then somehow it will come back to you (karma).

I think your awesome for being a good person and you have my sincere respect.

People are always treated differently uniformity in applying rules is just something we never see and i know how frustrating it can be. The best way is just to get nasty start asking the ppl with the suitcases tryin to cram them in the bins if they have special education needs and if this is the reason they are too stupid to follow rules!
