My lab has gray,soft,"barnacle-like growth" on his side. The vet is stumped..what could it be?

It does not seem to grow or bother him.

It could just be a fatty tumor. Your vet should do a biopsy, and if he's still stumped, find a new vet. Any type of growth is usually easily identifiable. Good luck.

My Rotti had something like that...as long as it doesn't get huge, leave it alone...could be a small tumor, or a wart (that is what mine was diagnosed with)...if the vet is not worried, neither should you...you can have it biopsied to find out if it is cancer.
