My dog has a raised black lump on his leg. I immediately shaved around it to see if I could tell if it was a tic but I couldn't see any legs. Is there another way to tell?

Scab is a physical reaction to something under your skin. Tic's are critters. You can take a paper towel dipped in hydrogen preroxide, & rub over area. Somtimes that'll draw out the bugs; then use a tweezer to totally remove them if you can't just pick them up onto the towel.

Lol well if u coudent c any feet or movment then it is proberly not a tic if it's a scab it should b rough over the surfice and fit the wound excatly a dog's scab is excatly the same as a person's scab!! You could try holding a wet cloth over it this will cause the scab 2 become soft if it becomes soft then u can b sure it's a scab as the tic would move from the site!!

How ever as suggested u shold get a vet 2 check it cos it could mean that a tic/mite etc has been feeding on your dog!! I suggest u get some Frontline Flea Spray and pick up some Household flea spray. follow the directions on the can. i found some fleas in my place and zapped em good!!

A decade ago but here I am.... A VET! CALL A VET!!! IF YOU CANT SOEND 100 BUCKS EVERY TIME YOUR DOG HAS A SNIFFLE YOU SHOULDNT OWN A DOG!!!!!!

God darn people, dogs get ticks.... if it is smooth all over, no hair growing out and seems to be only attached by the VERY "HEAD" You have yourswlf a tick!

Disinfect some tweezers and get in there, like really in there, grab it, pull as much fur away butnif you get some fur pull it out if you knownyou have a good hold. You need to get the head. Get that little blood sucker and pull it out and DESTROY IT!

Then put disinfectant on the area for a bit. Yes vet is best but I have handled a tick or 5 in my life, my dog and others. All are fine btw.

But make sure your dog is on a good flea and tick regiment and you wont have the issue, as much, ticks are learning

I agree with the others, you need to take your dog to the Veterinarian. If that's not an option, remove all hair from the area and heat up a small piece of metal and touch it to the scab/tick. Your dog probably won't like it too much, but if it's a tick, it will detach itself and you'll know for sure. Definately don't pick at it, if you kill a tick while it's attached, part of the mouth that it attaches with will remain imbedded in your dog and can cause a serious infection.

A tick will only be attached at the head. You should be able to lift the body. Be careful when you remove, you don't want to leave the head in, it might get infected. Douse it with alcohol several times and it will let go. Flush it.

A scab is attached on all sides. A tick will only be held on my its mouth. If it is a tick, do not pull it off. Get Advantix or Frontline to kill it and keep them off for a month.

The common dog tick can range in size from very small, but clearly visible, to quite large. Then when they're engorged, they blow up like a big greyish/greenish blob.

If it's a tick, just the head is imbedded, so you should be able to move the body around.

Take it to a vet and have them look at it. If its a tick they'll pull it, usually my techs do that no charge, or if its something else they may be helpful with identifying it and with further recommendations.

Take it to a vet to see if it is anything to be concerned about. They have ways to check these things.
