I mean, it hurts worse than just hitting your leg or something. shouldn't it be less suceptible to pain, not more?

When the knee hits something hard like a "hard edge of a table", it is really painful as the bone is subjected to a "line pressure" as compared to when you ran and fall on your knees. The level of pain produced by the brain is related to the amount of pressure or lack of blood supply or death tissues. One thing you forget to mention that anytime the knee hits something hard (the same for your little toe), you "speak a new language of 4 letter words" that was never taught to you at home or at school!!! He!he!

Maybe it hurts because it hits the joint behind it some, but protects it a lot. And without the kneecap it would hurt even worse!!
