I think it's a more dangerous version. At some point everyone realizes that The Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus are fictional. However, while this realization hurts temporarily, overall it's just a fun thing for kids.

The god / religion thing is a dangerous idea since it clouds reality for your whole life and tries to get you to ignore facts.

Well, I still believe in the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus, and I'm old, so when does the God bit come

I think the tooth fairy and particularly Santa are really a way of helping children to cope when the grow up and realise there is no GOD. When they learn about the atrocities in the world and their blind faith leaves them and they realise the is no GOD then at least they will have some experience of the disappointment (having lost Santa) and hopefully will not be too traumatised.
Although why we can't just tell them the truth about it all and save them the disappointment in the first place is beyond me!

Yes,it's a pity some people never mature, they need a substitute for the tooth fairy to help them through life.

hahahahaha Wow! I like your question. Human beings need to believe in something bigger spiritually speaking, because they cannot simply explain things that do not fit in their minds, and gives a kind hope. So, when they didn't know why it rained, they invented the God of Rain, then, they saw fire was basic for life and so they invented the God of Fire, The Sun was a misterious light on the sky that gives warmth..so they invented the God of Sun, and so on... once we can explain more and more things, God, will eventually disappear... maybe people will believe in a "higher" thing....

The truth is even more frightening, Santa is another name for the Devil or Satan. I never lied to my kids about dear old santa.
