Christians are shoving their religion down our throats. I't seems as though a lot of atheist seem to be upset because Christians choose to believe. They retaliate against our beliefs with arrogant, vile, rude, insensitive and blaphemous remarks. Then they take it to another level and continue to ask to Why and If questions. Whats up with that?

i don't know. i think they're trying to justify their non-belief in God.
it's very sad, because deep down, we all just want to be loved and accepted. atheists seem to think that there's something wrong with christianity because it promises love and peace and requires sacrifice--as if there's a catch, or a hippie religion.
they're probably just unhappy. i know i'd be, if i thought my existence only came down to 70 years of working and griping.

B/c Xians do try to 'preach the word' a lot or vote to make free-thinking individuals follow rules/laws based on their teachings, which, as far as a rational mind is concerned, are from a flawed book. There are aggressive and passive ppl on both sides, it depends on what side you're viewing the argument from. As far as a lot of free-thinking ppl are concerned a Xian related religion has a violent past and a certain person may have a history of their own that's far from 'loving'. When a Xian says 'God/Jesus is love', I think you can understand how that would not bring a pleasant reply. Same goes the other way. The sweetest person I ever knew was a devout Xian and I've seen some very hateful questions/responses from atheists.

Many Christians believe it is their mission in life to make people believe in their religion. I have seen MANY answers to questions referring to the statement I just made. "They retaliate against our beliefs with arrogant, vile, rude, insensitive and blaphemous remarks." Honestly, I have had more Christians retaliate against me, are arrogant, vile, rude, and extremely insensitive to my right to believe whatever I want. I am getting quite tired of them telling me I will burn in hell. But I keep my tongue in my mouth, and relaize it is just their own true ignorance and intelligence showing through. Sure not all Christians are smart or dumb. But many claim to be Christian and believe in god when they have not even read the bible when backing up what they say. "Most" Christians I have an encounter with are very corrupt people. They lie all the time, commit "sins" without even thinking of what their false god Jesus (in my opinion) would want them to do, treat others poorly, are greedy, I could go on. So on a majority scale, how would you feel if you were in the Atheist's shoes, or in my shoes in particular?

Sigh* Well the problem with Christianity are many and varied. First off, there are thousands of different sects of Christianity and all claim to follow Jesus Christ and the Bible. In the media, you find bible thumping Christians who curse against homsexuals, who blow up abortion clinics, priests involved in sex scandals, and the list goes on forever.

What upsets many are the Christian right wing of America. Many unfairly ascribe what they see on TV to all Christians. So it's no wonder so many people hate Christians. Finally, lets not forget that all organized religion is maintained by people. And as we all know, people are imperfect.

You say atheists "retaliate against our beliefs with arrogant, vile, rude, insensitive remarks." Yet Christians are oftentimes caught doing the exact same thing. The sad truth is that many of the criticisms heaped onto Christians are justified to some extent. Religion bashing is easy.

BTW, I am a Christian myself. It's tough. It wouldn't be faith if there were clear answers. It wouldn't be love if there wasn't sacrifice. Just focus on Jesus Christ... no one else

The problem is basically that we have idiotic people on both sides. On the one hand, there is an issue with "Christians" who, instead of adopting a model of discipleship based upon Christ's teachings, believe that by slapping someone enough times with the Bible, they can convert them.

On the other hand, we do have an issue with Atheism as well. While a Theocraty is a bad thing in my opinion, a society based completely on Atheism is also bad in my view. It would mean a society that believed that this life was it, and once you die you decay, which in turn would promote a live hard, live fast lifestyle that is highly self-destructive.

The basic issue on both sides seems to be a lack of dialog. I can speak to an Atheist on the topic of religion as long as we both keep a level of respect for each other, and agree that, even if the other is wrong in our point of view, it is still a valid viewpoint that can be discussed through an intelligent conversation.

So, to answer "what is up with that" in the short form: Human stupidity and intolerence on both sides of the fence tend to screw it up for everyone.

Because some churches dogma includes bringing new members into the fold. Thus we have had missionaries interrupt perfectly happy societies all over the world that have now ceased to exist in their natural ways. All because of "inspired christians" who had to go "save the souls of those 'half-naked bushpeople,' in some other place." Many folds of christians have been butting into other people's belief systems to overtake them for centuries. The Spanish Inquisition comes to mind. Yeah, that was a pretty time. The Taiping rebellion in China by Hong Xiuquan, who claimed he was, "God's Chinese Son," and took over and created chaos and mass starvation in China in Jesus' name. The Crusades. The Bush administration. Yeah, "christians" who spread the word of God with a weapon is the way we need to come to God. I don't think so.

I have paraphrased a piece in the Bible that says, "You will not come to God until you have tried everything else and failed, then you will come to God." I take this to mean that it isn't anyone's responsibility to force christianity into other peoples lives (or down their throats).

"Judge not lest ye be judged." Above all, this is the most important. Only God can pass judgment, it's not our place to do so.

Peace

A lot of atheists say that because it's pretty much true. Christianity is embedded in almost all aspects of western society, and Christians (as a group, not necessarily each individual one) still whine and complain it isn't enough and keep trying to push their religious ideals with wars and legislation.

Look at your own question. You categorize 'a lot' of what atheists say as "arrogant, vile, rude, insensitive, and blasphemous". No doubt much of that is simply the stating of their own position.

If I say "god is an imaginary friend", "jesus probably never even existed", "religion is a delusion/mental virus", "faith is a form of insanity", etc., no doubt you consider that rude, insensitive, and so on, even though it is nothing more than a matter of fact assesment of reality from my perspective.

Does it bother you that your Bible refers to me repeatedly as a fool/pig? Those are actual personal attacks, yet I imagine you revere those hateful verses.

I think it is because America is dominated with Christian themes, they are everywhere. And even though our Constitution says that we are free to practice whatever religion we choose but yet if you are not a Christian enthusiast people say that you are atheist. Just to let you know not every one who chooses not to fall for Christianity is an atheist. 85% of all funds collected by churches dissappear into the hands of those who run churches. Only 10-15% go toward charity and community outreach.

Upset because you choose to believe? No, what upsets me is when religion is used as it is today... to justify violence and bigotry in the name of something that nobody can really agree to anyway. Goodness comes out of humanity... not god. I have serious doubts about anyone who claims that without god there would be no good. I treat my fellow human beings with respect and i live my life as to set an example. It makes me wonder that if it were definitively discovered that god in fact does not exist, how would they behave? Like i said before, all the good that you see in religion can come from secular means... it's the bad stuff that is justified by religion that is it's downfall.

It's not the atheists who come on stong as rude, arrogant, or vile. Most atheists would prefer to be left alone. However, religious folk have a strange tendency to want to get their religious superstitions validated by law. We atheists are also (in a recent poll) regarded as the most untrustworthy of all groups of people due to our lack of belief. We are treated with either pity or contempt by religionists, and are constantly barraged with attempts to "save" us. That kind of thing can get on people's nerves.

I might also point out that Christians on this board tend to say some very nasty things about religious non-christians...Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Paganism, Wicca, etc... Clean up your own act and see where it gets you.

So atheists aren't allowed to ask "why" and "if" questions? And yet it is perfectly OK for christians to post "atheists why can't you understand that jesus is your saviour"... "atheists what are you going to say when you die and realize you're going to hell".... "atheists if you don't believe in God you must not have any morals or sense of good and bad"...

These are all questions that have been asked about 20 times each on here. And that's OK with you, as long as atheists keep their mouths shut and don't state their opinions?

If you can ask us why we don't believe, why shouldn't we ask you why you do believe? What makes your religion so special?

We think some christians shove religion down our throats because of the "you need to believe, or you're going to hell" comments. I've never heard an atheist say "you need to be atheist, or you will rot in some stinking horrible place for eternity". The threats are not exactly inviting!
