It sure is edible. We make it a lot here in Turkey. It's kind of a side-dish. To do it;

- put the chickpeas in a big bowl and add water on them the night before so they will peel off.
- boil the chickpeas
- mash them in a blender
- put tahin, a little salt and lemon juice and mix them again
- serve it in a plate, put some olive oil and red pepper and parsley on it.

It's yummy. Some people do it with potatoes, it's cool too but hummus originally means chickpeas in Arabic so I assume it's an Arabic food.

Chickpeas mushed up and spices are stirred in.

Personally, I have tried this at least three times, and I have to run to the bathroom to rinse out my mouth each time. I love all kinds of foods, but for some reason, this is something that I just can't handle. Maybe the texture, maybe the ingreidents. Must bring back a bad childhood memory or something.

Its most of the above. Great with celery. Should be a pale yellow colour and be slightly sloppy. Vote the first answer as best because they were the first to get in the correct answer.

It is. And it's yummy. It's chick peas (garbanzo beans) ground up with spices and oils added like tahini (sauce made from sesame seeds), garlic, and olive oil.

Yummy with veggies or just crackers.

It's pureed chick peas, or garbanzo beans, made with tahini and other stuff. It's very, very good served with warm pita bread or flour tortillas. You should try it.
