Every other country in North America and South America have other names. Canada, Mexico, etc. The true name for us is The United States of America . . . a group of American states that are united. My guess is the name is simply derived from the last word, "America" and over time it's come to represent people of the U.S.A. No one would argue there are other countries that make up North and South America.

it somewhat is an idiomatic mistake that has remained, and that the U. S. with the aid of its way of existence has pushed foreign places (to different continents like Asia or Africa). once I return and forth in Latin u . s . a . I continuously hear that whinge, by using fact there they call us Estadounidenses or North human beings (that's additionally not superb suited, yet possibly extra superb suited than American). i don't think of that maximum US electorate think of that they are extra suited, that's in simple terms an abbreviation from u . s . a .. additionally it comes from the Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespussi who made a map of South u . s . a . and a sprint of established u . s . a .. analyzing particularly some the responses right here make me unhappy to be sure what share teenagers do not even know this person-friendly piece of historic information, that's amazingly unhappy certainly

It is a convention of speech that developed over time. The French also have a way of saying US. The Japanese call us the "Rice Country", it's just a convention of speech. It has a lot to do with the geography and with the tendency of language to go to easiest way to say a thing. I'm a United Statesian? I'm an American. Figure the syllables involved. Get over it.

I personally never though about it..but don't really follow the question either. i call myself an american because i was born in the united states of america...so american, for me, comes from the ending of that in america...though im from jersey, i will tell people i have from nj if talking to someone in the states...people from other countries call themselves, for example, ecuadorians, because they are from their country of ecuador...people from the usa base it on their country..america...we are not basing it on the north american continent...thats just a theory though..i could be way off. i just got back from dominican republic..and if someone asked where i was from..id say US..then if they said where from..id say new jersey...my friends faqmily lives in ecuador..his parents are from there, but he was born in the states..and his family from ecuador laugh when he says he is ecuadorian, telling him, "no ur not, you're american"..so its not just people from USA calling us americans, its other countries as well

The United States is a virtual mixing pot of different people! It would be too much to get into detail about exactly what we are because truth be told there is no true defintion. We simply say we are American to unite us as one.No matter what race or ethnicity or what country your from,we all fall under one category and unite when we say we are American!

It's too hard to say "United States of Americans" quickly enough. I know what you mean though.

Because UnitedStatesofAmericans is too long, especially for the hyphenated minorities. Can you imagine having to call someone an African-UnitedStatesofAmerican? And United Statesers sounds dumb.

Soy mexicano! =)
