Ah, God is all things! God is not a person, he is every person - he is every thing to us, know it or not. Your very sole is in his charge, your every mistake in his judgement alone.
If you are a student of philosophy, you will remember the Cave that Plato describes, the person tied up seeing shadows, thinking that was reality. The one day is released, and sees the real people. God is the next step from there - the next dimension of knowing.
You may simply choose to believe and say prayers by the number, or try to understand everything around you is related to where and what God is. You choose your belief, most important God is Good.

OK - Here's my opinion and I'm an atheist. As you already said 'all these religions are clearly ridiculous' - and I agree. Personally I can't wait until religious beliefs are gone - I feel it may happen, but it won't be for a long time.
I don't plan on trying to obnoxiously trying to impose my feelings on anyone (unless you ask!) and I do believe in live and let live.
If you want to believe - then great! The only people I have a problem with are the fundies (of all religions) that are completely closed-minded and won't rest until they've converted everyone else.

To each his own, but when your beliefs intrude on my life-style and freedom then they become valid targets for dissent and change. If theists do not want their beliefs ridiculed and attacked they should keep them to theselves.
I deny the existence of god, because I have never found a reason to believe. I have no proof god does not exists, but you do not need proof to not believe in anything.
For example, no one can prove santa does not exist. Does this mean that we should aknowledge the possibility that santa may exist? Ofcourse not! Further we should recognize that god has more in common with every other mythological god, and less in common with an existing being.
All probability suggests god is not real.

Hmmm, I'm not an atheist and my 'version' of theism certainly has nothing to with religion or anything resembling it. I'm more of a philosophical theist. To me 'God' is the Kosmic Pattern, and IT transcends and includes every spark of Itself without hierarchy, superiority, judgement or paternal/maternal control.
Every human being contains the Spark of Pattern and that divine Spark is our life itself, beneath all the layers of biology and ego which form our small mortal selves.
Life has no end, just as Pattern has no end. Life evolves as consciousness. Every Spark of Pattern has the intention to evolve Its consciousness (which is one with Pattern, the Source of all) imprinted into the core of Its Being. Human development stagnates in an environment that glorifies ego and puts no value on developing human awarness of self via Self Realization.
This is my understanding, translated into language as best I could in the space allowed. :-)
Something interesting:
Philosophical theism:
Philosophical theism is a belief that God exists (or must exist), independent of the teaching or relevation of any particular religion. Some philosophical theists are persuaded of God's existence by philosophical arguments, while others consider themselves to have a religious faith that need not be, or could not be, supported by rational argument. They may accept arguments or observations about the existence of God advanced by theologians working in some religious tradition, but reject the tradition itself. (For example, a philosophical theist might believe certain Christian arguments about God while rejecting Christianity.)

I'll answer the ? first...God is a pure energy, dual entity combination...a being capable of separating Itself into multitudes of sensors so that He/She could create an experience for themselves that demonstrates Who & What They Are...Hence, the phrase...you cannot know yourself as Light unless you step into the Dark.
As for the rest, the concept of being "rewarded for eternity" isn't that far off the mark...we love Who We Are--and celebrate often...is that a "reward" for living through different lifetimes--a good place to call "Home"?...works for me!
And you DID ask to be born...you chose your Mother/Father, the situation, and most of your experiences here...a very well planned map of what you came here to know yourself to be...and very much feeling as a 'gift of this Earth'..for everyone!
Religions are not "clearly ridiculous", because if they were, most wouldn't be able to exist as they are...Right?
Just a thought, too, until you see differences as being creativities that can be combined for great strength of purpose, I strongly suggest holding off the rev til that time...

now you are sounding positively agnostic. good luck with your neutral movement. I will just stay here to watch the fanatical atheists and the christian extremists battle. It is as much fun as boxing, or WWE wrestling. They even make up funny avatars. Once in a while the satire reaches a peak of nasty indelicacy. Have fun, I hope you enjoy the mellow beige area.

God is a concept and a label. Why must the concept of "God" involve anything with an awareness? Is it not possible that "God" is "String Theory", or another Scientific Theory that explains the Universe without having the human characteristics of awareness and separate intelligence which we ascribe to the concept?
If you want to know whether there is a God, first you must determine what role it is that the God must fill.

The True GOD (aka Godhead, The Father, The ONE, etc. etc. etc.) is everything and nothing that is (which there really is no such thing as nothing in these terms) and expressed itself (It's not a thing or a he or a she) by manifesting as us (we the things including rocks, plants, etc. in the matter, and souls, angels and the likes in the spirit) in the spiritual and the matter world.

we are not born to become anything. the existence of choice guarantees that fact. yes, we did ask to be born, unfortunately we forgot to specify when and where. :) In the name of my God I hope we never leave our differences behind us. That's when you get into serious trouble. (With most any god.)
