I am third year member of a group for SAHMs. I returned to work part-time last year, but I am still active in my local chapter. We have always had members who want to show up to events (sometimes), but they never want to plan or coordinate anything. Well, the elected officers (I'm secretary) always end up doing most of the grunt work. None of us get paid or expect to get paid, but the officers always end up bitter and burnt out before their one year term is up.

It's so bad that we have trouble finding people who want to run for office the next year, b/c they think all of the work will fall on them somehow. There's about 25 of us, but only 6-8 members who are really active in keeping the chapter afloat each year. How do we turn things around for 2007?

Find ways to make the jobs "mother sized" so that they are easy to do. If it is too much work, tell the ones who aren't helping that you are cutting back on events because there is not enough help to keep up at the pace you've been going at. THEN DO IT.....cut back! Tell them that if they want more events, then the officers need more people to pitch in and help.

I am also a member of a mom's club. I think the best resolution for your problem is to have a mostly solid schedule according to each season. For example, for summer you can have the basic activities...going to the park, swimming, McDonald's play land, etc. You will have at least 2 regular summer activities on the calender each week. Maybe the last week of each month, you can plan something new just to add variety. As fall approaches, you will drop the swimming, but add a different weather appropriate activity and have a "set schedule" each week except for a new activity the last week of each month. This concept will apply to each changing season. This will mean that the board members will only have to plan something new once a month or so. You can also plan the holiday activities (Halloween, Christmas, Easter) ahead of time and you won't have to scramble as much to try to please everyone at the last minute. You can also send an email welcoming anyone who wants to host an activity to do so if they get a good idea at any time during the year. Good luck w/ everything!
